Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
Played On 05/09/2015Stunning scenery, difficult design
Royal Hawaiian GC, along with Ko'olau, are probably the 2 most scenic courses I have ever played, right ahead of The Ocean Course at Kiawah and National Golf Links of America. Just breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. Playing through the jungles is a great test as the wind was high and 5 feet off the fairway in spots is a lost ball (jungle). That said, the course is MUCH more playable than it's neighbor, Ko'olau, and more fun. Back nine opens up a lot compared to front. Good staff and good greens and fairways. This course is worth playing for the scenery alone, but is also a fun test of golf for better players. Best cart GPS I have ever seen. The flyovers help a lot. Course is literally unwalkable and beginners should play elsewhere.
Turtle Bay Resort - Arnold Palmer Course
Played On 05/08/2015GREAT design. 17th green is amazing.
Clubhouse is like an old municipal, could use a refresh in a big way. Food and service are very good, though. Range is beat up and doesn't represent the quality of the golf course. VERY long drive to first tee. First 2 holes are bland but the strength of the course builds with every hole after that. By the 4th hole you can see that this is an outstanding design and the back nine is fantastic. Fairways were absolutely perfect carpet. Same with most tee boxes. Unfortunately, greens were very bumpy and beat up. Hopefully they will get that squared away and this will be a tremendous experience. The final 3 holes are spectacular. Standing on the 17th green is special. Great challenge from the 6,800 yd tees for this 8 hdcp.
Kapolei Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2015Fun and in very good shape
Great clubhouse and tee gift is a very nice touch. Food in grill was much better than most golf courses. Course is fun and playable for all levels although we played in 20 mph wind which made it a little more challenging. Not terribly scenic but makes up for it with nice conditions and a really enjoyable design. Will be back next time we're on Oahu.
Eagle's Landing Country Club - Creek Nine
Played On 04/22/2015Good nine, but like Lake and Creek better.
Good layout with some nice holes. I like Lake and Creek nines better but this one is certainly good. Greens perfect but a tad slow. A good option if you are on the South side of Atlanta. Very nice clubhouse and staff. Fairways needed to be mowed but grass is good.
Eagle's Landing Country Club - Creek Nine
Played On 04/22/2015Nice option on South side
Very nice clubhouse and neighborhood. Course was wet from all the rain and fairways hadn't been mowed yet. When they are mowed, they should be great. Bent greens were excellent, maybe a touch slow, but in perfect condition. This 9 has a good bit of water in play. First 4 holes aren't too tough then the teeth come out with 6 and 8 being long par 4's that today were playing into a 20 mph wind. 9 heading up to the clubhouse is a memorable, good par 5. Play way right off the tee if you are into the wind.
Woodside Country Club - Cupp Course
Played On 04/16/2015Good facility, fun design
Nice community and good facilitiies. Played the Plantation course. Homes line both sides of many fairways, but we were never in danger of being OB, as the fairways are generous. Very nice design with pretty visual backdrops (azaleas, bunkering) and smooth, sloping greens with collection areas. A second shot course, driving is fairly straightforward, but kidney shaped greens on a lot of holes require you to dial in on pin location and be on proper tier in order to score. Several holes that skirt the lake are beautiful. Was in good shape despite torrential rain the day before. Great work by grounds crew to get it back in very nice shape (especially bunkers). Both courses here and the unaffiliated Reserve Club next door are good layouts that don't disappoint.
Laurel Springs Golf Club
Played On 03/10/2015Fun layout, fast greens
This is a very fair layout that allows for some room off the tee and most green complexes have a bailout area for safe play. First 5 holes ease you into the round, then 6-11 are probably the toughest test on the course. 13 is a unique hole that has no trees and a lake very much in play on the right. Overall, a really fun round and good conditions. "New" bermuda greens are still extremely firm and fast..
TPC San Antonio - Canyons Course
Played On 02/21/2015Great views and fun test
Fun "resort-style" course. Not what you'd expect from Dye, but that's not a bad thing. Very fair with room to bail out. Bunkers aren't as deep as most Dye designs. Really enjoyable, fantastic views of the nature preserve and surrounds. Open off the tee, greens protected but not brutal. Great practice facilities but they charge you $16 for them on top of a hefty green fee. Best deal is to the stay and play package for sure (we did not). Great 19th hole at 18 Oaks. Great service there. Blue cheese olives in the martinis finish a great day.
TPC San Antonio - Oaks Course
Played On 02/20/2015Extreme test, immaculate conditions, high price
Course was in "tournament shape." Completely overseeded with rye grass. Deep green and beautiful. Really significant rough and most firm, fast greens I have played in many years. Green complexes are raised and run off into closely mown collection areas and deep bunkering. This is not a course for beginners or very high handicaps. I am a 7 hdcp and got beaten up badly. Hit some 9 irons to centers of greens that bounced and released over (with premium ball, not a rock). Not nearly as scenic as sister course Canyons, but 5x the test. Conditions were among best I have ever played. Price is brutal but this gives you the real feel of playing a PGA Tour venue. 18 is an outstanding hole to finish a match. Highly recommend the drinks and food at the restaurant (18 Oaks).
Clear Creek Golf Course
Played On 01/18/2015REALLY Needs TLC
The layout has some potential but the conditioning is about a 1.5 out of 5. I realize that it is dormant season for bermuda but the fairways were really spotty and have quite a bit of weeds and the greens are sparse and have a lot of dirt patches. To be fair, they putt relatively well, but this is a step above goat track status for conditions. We figured out after a few holes that the big pampas bushes mark hazard edges, but no one had told us that. Would've been good to know. For $25 for late twilight it isn't a rip off, but certainly not a course to drive far to. Did like the wildlife. Saw a hawk, several ibis, a beaver, and other critters. It certainly has potential to be a nice course.
Healy Point Country Club
Played On 11/03/2014Nice option in Canongate/ClubCorp Family
Really enjoyable layout with interesting holes. Good greens, nice staff, notably bartender. Fairways and tees were a little scruffy but certainly very playable. Very interesting par 5's and a few beautiful holes on the various lakes/ponds. 18 is a little ridiculous (island fairway) but overall very good. Only real negative is really beat up/sub par practice facility. Wouldn't build a trip around this course but a good option when in Macon/Central GA.
St. Marlo Country Club
Played On 12/30/2014Needs some TLC, but still a good option for public
Challenging layout with heavily guarded greens. Greens are usually in good condition except in mid summer when the bent grass is stressed. Excellent set of par 3's and an interesting layout overall. Takes several rounds to learn where to play the safe shot, as the direct route on holes can lead to big numbers. Facility and neighborhood have deteriorated over the years, but it's still a fine option for golf on the North/Northeast side of ATL. 9 may be most controversial hole in Georgia public golf. Don't go for it, it's not worth it. Lay up and commit to approach. The pro, Andreas, is an excellent, friendly, patient teacher. Highly recommend him for lessons.
Druid Hills Golf Club
Played On 11/26/2014Excellent Experience Every Time
Have played DHGC many times as a guest and truly enjoy it. Greens are usually some of the very best in Atlanta and staff is extremely attentive and helpful. Traditional layout with some very interesting holes and strong set of par 5's. Will challenge ever club in your bag, but isn't too hard for higher handicap players.
Standard Club, The
Played On 01/28/2015Great layout, great staff.
Very good challenge but a lot of fun. Beautiful heather grass frames many holes. Really great group of par 5's. Clubhouse is a little dated but food and staff make up for it. Have played as a guest here many times and always enjoy the experience.
The Golf Club at Indigo Run
Played On 03/05/2015Excellent Option if You Can Get On
Outstanding layout. Plenty of room off tees but still very strong challenge. Approaches are tricky with kidney shaped greens and great bunkering and hazards. Plays very fair yet very interesting. Staff was great, facilities are excellent. Highly recommended.
Country Club of Hilton Head
Played On 03/04/2015Okay but some better options in the area
Staff and facilities are good. Course was in pretty rough shape (beat up greens, sparse grass), but I realize that there was a very harsh winter and they are recovering. The course plays very narrow especially from the longer tees. There are a great number of trees marked for either pruning or removal, which would help with the layout, as many holes play extremely tight. Decent layout, not much wow factor but certainly good. Worth playing if you are in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way. If greens were in excellent shape (they were about 4 out of 10 in my book), the rating would increase significantly.
Having played the Golden Bear course (next door), I'd love to play this course.
Do you have any advice, or a contact that would be able to help secure a tee time.
Thanks
Mike H
