Don't play Sharp Park right now

I love Sharp Park, and I want to see it someday realize its full potential. Unfortunately, my golf group of 8 guys made the mistake of booking two Saturday tee times without checking out the recent GolfPass reviews. It was the wettest, muddiest course I've ever played. Virtually everyone in our group ruined a pair of golf shoes, pants or both. Surprisingly the back nine holes weren't that wet. The fairways of the front nine, especially those across the street, were mosh pits. Everyone would lose plugged balls hit right down the middle. With the winter we're having, it's wise to call before you book and ask for honest answers about the conditions. The pro shop gave us the resident rate at $45, $20 off, but it was so unplayable that no golfers should be sent out in those conditions. It's harmful to the golf ocurse. I will give Sharp Park another chance when there's an extended dry stretch, but it's going to take a while to get things back to playability.

Jamaica's jungle golf experience

Sandals golf doesn't get mentioned along with the upper tier courses of Montego Bay, but for a golfer on a Jamaican vacation, it's well worth it to sacrifice the beach for a tee time. The course was in solid shape when I played it. The greens were slow - and likely always will be - but it's nothing you can't adjust to with some patience. Taking a local caddie is what makes the round go. The greens are some of the smallest in resort golf. Hitting them is hard enough. Putting on them is even trickier. Many holes are quite hilly or feature a dogleg, meaning you've got to have a strategy to be in the right position to score well. The only real water hazard is the pond between the 10th and 18th fairway. Only a good drive on the last hole will carry it, something neither me or my playing partner could accomplish. The clubhouse is relatively new, rebuilt after a fire in 2021. There's a bar upstairs serving food and drinks and a spacious pro shop below.

The West's friendlier sister

The East Course is, thankfully, a thousand yards shorter than the championship West Course and that fact alone makes her a friendlier, more fun version of golf. It's oversimplification to say that it is easier, though. The East features plenty of challenges, especially approach shots up hills and over bunkers. The third tee shot is typical of these challenges - players tee off over a wall of bunkers that looks intimidating but it's not actually all that tough to carry as long as you're confident in the shot.
Instead of finishing with two risk-reward par 5s like the West, the East ends with two brutally long par 4s at nos. 16 and 18 with a meaty 215-yard par 3 sandwiched in between. If you can survive this home stretch, you could shoot a really good score relative to your handicap.

A true championship test

It's amazing how easy pros make golf look. Wentworth West is a true championship test that chewed me up pretty good, and yet, the best of the DP World Tour have no trouble shooting excellent scores. The hilly routing delivers all sorts of lies and shots not everybody can handle. The par 5, par 5 finish is one of the most interesting in professional golf. It allows anybody within three shots of the lead the chance to win the tournament with an epic ending. I rolled a pair of 5s and came away feeling like a champion.

The second best course at Wentworth?

So which course - Edinburgh or the East - is the second best course at Wentworth behind the big and bad West Course that hosts the DP World Tour's grand finale? I'm voting Edinburgh. It's got a couple of signature par 3s over water - the second and 17th - and plenty of narrow doglegs to keep players on task.

London's premier resort course

I really wanted to give The Grove five stars because almost everything about the experience is top notch - the service, the course conditions, the food at the resort, the scenic and enjoyable routing. I just couldn't quite put it on the same pedestal as the other five star reviews I've doled out over the years. For many golfers, it will be the best golf experience they've ever had. It's a joy to play - fair, fun and fantastic. The one inconvenience was a significant backup on the 10th hole that slowed up play for a while before things opened back up.

A pleasant heathland walk

Overshadowed by nearby Sunningdale, Berkshire's 36 holes of heathland golf holds its own with the best of London. Although a private club, the Berkshire accepts overseas visitor play. Its routing rises and falls in the forest, providing a wonderful mix of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. The heather lining the fairways is absolutely deadly, so avoid it at all costs.

Hardly second string at Sunningdale

Just getting the chance to peg it at Sunningdale - New or Old - is a privilege of a lifetime. I found the New Course a demanding test of golf. Yet the beauty of the scene is striking. Every hole looks like a painting. At one time, the Colt design was considered too penal so a number of new holes were created. Many of the raised greens are well-defended by bunkers. If you can shoot your handicap here, you've had yourself a day.

A heathland course for all

West Hill is part of the three 'W's - clubs that all start with the letter 'W' - outside London. Endlessly charming, West Hill couldn't have been more enjoyable. It was one of my favorite discoveries of a week playing heathland golf outside London. There were blind shots, uphill holes, towering trees and dangerous heather along the journey. It's a gem without the pretentiousness that sometimes hinders the experience at more exclusive clubs in the area.

The best course in St. George/Mesquite

I never thought a course as flat as Black Desert could overtake more dramatic settings at Sand Hollow and Wolf Creek, but that's what great design can do. Weiskopf's last course is a fitting tribute to his legacy as an excellent architect. His routing through the black lava rocks is a masterclass on how to maximize a dramatic setting and make the course fit into such a beautiful landscape without overpowering it. There's so many cool holes - six that feature water, two signature par 4s, a nod to the famous Postage Stamp at Royal Troon, a par 5 that winds through black rock like a snake. Once the clubhouse and comfort stations are complete, this place will be one of the best golf experiences west of the Rockies. Upcoming PGA Tour and LPGA Tour events will put the golfing public on blast. Put this on your bucket list.

A wonderful setting for golf

Set in the shadow of the Cliffs of Hurricane, Copper Rock is a treat to play. The 360 degree views of the surrounding desert landscape makes for a memorable day. As the name of the town suggests, this is a windy site, so play early if you can before the breeze picks up. The only downer about the experience is driving to the first tee from the temporary clubhouse. It's awkward riding on the cart path through holes you will eventually play, but it is what it is until a permanent clubhouse is built. The routing is very good, starting out on flat ground before climbing to higher heights on the back nine. Each nine finishes at an elevated double green with a pond separating each fairway.

Surprisingly in mediocre condition

I was looking forward to playing Sand Hollow for the third time, and was unfortunately disappointed by some spotty conditioning. All the great things about Sand Hollow still apply - the cliffside holes on the back nine, the playable routing, the good food in the clubhouse - but the sight of construction below the patio between the ninth and 18th holes and the average conditions left me wanting the good old days when Sand Hollow stood among my favorite resort courses. I'll have to go back at some point and see if the conditioning issues were a one-time thing, or a trend.

A fun nine-holer in St. George

This course is what all municipal nine-holers should be - fun, welcoming, affordable, scenic, enjoyable, strategic, representative of the local golf scene and available for all. It's a great way to start OR finish a trip to St. George because you'll have a smile when you walk off the ninth green. There's some really cool holes, and a couple of masterclass doglegs. A new clubhouse on a hill overlooks it all.

One of the Bay Area's underappreciated gems

I've been searching for a second local favorite that's fun and affordable outside of my home course (Santa Teresa) and Moffett is a strong contender. I thoroughly enjoyed my first walk around it this summer. It was quirky and demanding and interesting, all at once. The conditioning was fine. The pace of play was questionable (as it is at all Bay area munis, it seems), but that's the only knock. It was tough to find the course once you get past the checkpoint to enter the NASA base, so leave some extra time just to make sure you're not late.

Brainerd's most fun course?

I had forgotten how enjoyable a round at The Pines was, having returned for the first time in more than a decade for some golf. The renovated Woods and Lakes nines were a great combo. Although there are houses lining some fairways, they are set back in the trees, keeping the course's natural feel. There's doglegs, water, elevation change and a good variety of short and long par 4s. The new white sand really pops. I can't say enough good things about the Pines.

A backwoods golf adventure

I'm surprised by the three-star review The Preserve got in August. My round over the July 4th week was perfect. My group was first off (which obviously kept pace of play from being an issue) and had a great time. It was my first round at the course in more than a decade, and I thought it was even better than I remembered. If target golf isn't your strength, bring a few extra balls. Narrow fairways and some tough carries over marshland are in order. I thought the conditioning was more than good enough to be worth the extra drive time to find the Preserve.

Needs time to grow in

For those who have played the Legacy courses at Cragun's in the past, they will recognize some of the holes and shots on the new routing. The biggest takeaway from a round in July was how thin and firm the fairways were. There was no way to control the ball. Sometimes it would bounce into hazards and bunkers far past your normal shot pattern. Hopefully by summer 2024, the playing conditions will have matured, giving Brainerd another signature place to play.

West Cliffs dazzles north of Lisbon

West Cliffs rolls out one surprise after another for golfers. There are a handful of fun blind shots to keep first-timers guessing. Every once in a while, a bunker or manicured sand hill will pop up in the middle of the fairway. Golf holes alternate between forest and dunesy landscapes. I'd argue it's as good as anything in the more celebrated Algarve. Don't miss it.

Fun resort golf at QDL

I can't compare the North course to the other two courses at QDL, but I can vouch that the North is a fun, friendly resort experience worth seeing in the Algarve. It's a what-you-see-is-what-you-get parkland course. There's some decent elevation changes, and a mix of bunker and water hazards to keep your attention. One thing to beware - the trees can capture your ball without giving it back, so that's something else to worry about. The watery par-4 12th is probably its most dangerous - and memorable - moment.

One of the Algarve's best courses

Palmares lived up to the lofty expectations I had for a course ranked highly by a number of publications. I was lucky to be paired with a trio of female members who were good company. The Alvor nine sits on higher ground with some great panoramic views. The Praia nine gets closest to the water and tries to replicate a sandy, dunesy links. The land is so flat, though, that I actually prefer the combination of the other two nines more. The new apartments near the clubhouse are perfect for stay and plays.
