A New Experience
This place has the appearance of a high-class country club 20-years past its prime. Apparently it’s had three different names, and is now under new ownership/management?
It took me 30 minutes to find the “starter.” The clubhouse for the course is no longer the clubhouse. Go past the parking lot, down the pot-holed road, to the cart barn where the club staff would have serviced equipment. Today I got to help the only staff on hand, a lady named Maggie (sweet gal!) gas-up my cart. The cart was nice, and ran like a top.
The course shows minimal signs of maintenance. No water in fixtures, no sand in bunkers (though there was plenty of sand on some greens). It’s clear the irrigation system is not in use, as 90% of the course (greens included) were brown. That said, the parts of the green that weren’t either sandy or treated for various maladies, rolled quite nicely.
It did appear that pin locations have changed in the not-too-distant past, and the entire course was at least mowed to a links-style level. So someone is doing their best. I really hope the new ownership has plenty of capital to sink into this place. The layout, elevation changes, and varying difficulties means this place has great potential. As stated above, it shows evidence of a once-great private club.
THIS GOLF COURSE IS CLOSED
Don't pay online through the app, you probably won't get your money back.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We apologize for the poor experience you had with us. We are currently undergoing changes in ownership and are making plans for many improvements in 2020. We appreciate you giving us a shot and hope you consider returning once we start making those improvements. Thanks for playing Lake Travis Golf Course!
That we could play anywhere was awesome at the end of December. The other reviews were accurate and fair.
We found the greens tolerable, a bit better than expected. I’d say if possible if you could add 1/2 stroke/ hole for putting that would be fair.
Fairways were in pretty good shape actually.
Correct: no water to drink on the course.
If they put some TLC into the greens this will move up on our rotation of places to play. Well worth the Golf Now price.
Thank you for taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass along your feedback to the staff so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting us!
Course is ok
The course is super tight and very quirky. The course was in pretty good shape though, but the greens could have used another cut. Even if you are hitting the ball well you will lose a few balls due to there being no room to miss tee shots.
Checking in is.... different. There is just a lady by the cart barn that gives you a cart. I paid online but not sure how you can otherwise pay onsite. They need to at least get a desk or something inside the restaurant. Would also be nice if there was quick stuff from the restaurant. Also really need to add about two water jugs a nine on the course. There were two restrooms but the plumbing is turned off.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you'll give us another try in the near future.
Welcome back, whoever you are!
Well it's already had two name changes since I last stopped by.. Good to see this place open again. I've always loved the design, but conditions have steadily declined over the last 20-plus years. It needs a lot of fixing, but it was not as bad as I feared. There's no drinking water and all of the ball washers were dry. That would be a good place to start, It's primitive golf, but still enjoyable at a Hot Deal price. As usual, pace of play is not an issue. Hope this place can make it, but history is not on its side.
Hello, thidmark. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars. We will make note of your feedback and hope you consider returning for another round soon.
Lake Travis CC AKA Green Deer
First time here.
It's a beautiful course - very hilly, narrow and sloping fairways, and blind shots...so it's a very difficult course if it's your first time.
The course needs some maintenance...no sand in any of the bunkers...most of the greens were below standard...the "grill" just opened but they don't serve beer...
Hi, GoldRanger1994. We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the teams in charge so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting Lake Travis Country Club. We hope you'll give us another try in the future.
Getting Better. Great Value. Nice Hill County lay out. Pace of play A+
Played here 5-6 times in the last 6 months. Every time we have returned the course has improved. The greens are very playable, perhaps a little slow, but not bad. There aren't significant dead spot on the greens like there were 6 months ago. Fairways have grass, a few bald spots in places, but nothing that will detract from your game. Bunkers still need work, so make agreements with your playing buddies on how you will address bunker play beforehand. For the condition of the course, the golfnow price is more than fair. You can play this course in under 3 hours if you want to, pace of play is EXCELLENT. There is no water on the course so bring your own beverages. All in all it's a beautiful Hill Country layout with a very relaxing atmosphere. You don't need to be ultra long off the tee to play here. If you have a 220-230 tee shot you can hit straight, you will find this course very enjoyable.
Poor condition
I played this course when it was known as Highland Lakes. This was my first round under new ownership. Usually courses in Texas has water stations every 3 - 4 holes. This course does not nor was I told water faucets were installed on holes 5 & 14. Neither offers cold water, very inadequate. Other issues, sand traps overrun with grass and half of the fairways are brown. Granted management seems to have plans in place to resolve the issues. I won't be playing this course anytime soon.
Potential
Great layout..... a little money and a lot of water and this could be a $125 a round golf experience.... saw around 100 deer while playing which added to the experience..... great views of the lake .... carts were fairly new and in good shape .... water the grass and you will have a great golf course !!!
Potential
This course has great potential. Grass was pretty fried and greens weren’t cut. Looks like they are in between owners, so no bar and grill at a country club was a tough pill to swallow. Could be nice, but needs lots of work
Country Club? Subpar for a muni.
As someone who decided this year (age 50) to finally “get serious” about working on my game, I’m always looking for a course that is quiet and cheap. I did find both those qualities at Lake Travis Country Club (which also goes by the name Green Deer Country Club). Other than that, however, it leaves much to be desired. First, while it is a golf community course, I see none of the usual trappings I would expect from a “country club”. When I finally found the pro shop (also a misnomer), the guy was surprised to see me...or anyone...and made some brief explanation about “just bought it” and “drought”. Hmmm...
The course itself is in decent shape, aside from dead spots on some greens, but every bunker is completely grown over with grass...this place has been neglected a long time. There is no drinking water on the course...almost unconscionable in the Texas heat. However, it is very playable, and quite challenging, with narrow fairways, and is extremely hilly (many tee or approach shots are blind). Also, if you like whitetail deer, this place is heaven...I encountered herds of 20+ on nearly every hole, with many very large bucks, and all of them are so accustomed to people you can almost pet them.
If you can hit your marks, would rather wait on the deer than another group, don’t need “amenities” of any kind, and need to play cheap, this is a course for you...you will pretty much get what you pay for. I suggest they change the name...
Maybe one day, potential there for sure
Pros:
-Pace of play is phenomenal ( I played 18 in 2 hours) and this can't be understated as Austin golf is terribly slow.
-Pro Shop incredibly friendly - it's a lean operation and there's not a lot of frills but really nice people
-Good view of the hill country and literally hundreds of deer
Cons:
-It's out there. GolfNow and other golf course locators give you distance from your current location as the crow flies - this is a full hour from downtown Austin with limited traffic because of the route you need to take.
-It's a bit wild - as it's in redevelopment stage, tee boxes are under-watered (you can't put a tee in the ground), there's no water boxes, ball-washers, sand buckets, etc.
-Fairway is rock hard and in some holes the rough is nicer than the fairway
-Sand traps are completely under repair
-Every hole is a blind shot - you can't see greens anywhere
-The holes are newly mapped out and your golf GPSes and applications only have the old course mapped so it's impossible to know where you're going. I lost multiple straight shots just because I had no idea the distances and holes would bend hard left or right.
-Greens are slow
-one or two holes need a driver, the rest are iron holes
Course in rebuilding mode
The course has been a round a while has been dormant for a while it’s been repurchased and in rebuilding mode. There are a lot of deer on the course one hole I counted 7 bucks and 10 doe a long with Bambi’s . Definitely a Texas Hill golf course.
Beautiful views
You can’t beat the views of Lake Travis from nearly every hole. The course was previously owned by city of Lago Vista and not well maintained up until it closed in October of 2017. Now the new owners are working diligently to bring it up to a high standard.. Let’s give it a chance and not act like a golf diva. I play the course 2 to 3 times a week (and I have played from St. Andrews to Ruidoso and lots in between) and find it a challenging course worth supporting.

RIP OFF
This is the worst golf course I've ever seen! The green was in terrible shape. The course wasn't designed for first timers, easily get lost. Luckily I arrived with my friend 2 hours before tee time to check it out, and able to cancel the reservation. However, I'm disappointed in Golf Now for promoting this deal, especially the value of the tee time isn't good. For example, my friend and I booked the tee time at AVERY, for the same value, and they have restaurant service, beautiful environment, the green are actually taken care of for that same value. Are you serious?! I want to be able to play at course where I can see how much I've improved, how much my putting has improved. This course doesn't give that experience to anyone AT ALL. I want my money back immediately.
It's not extreme when paying $40 dollars for this type of condition. Like I said, I went to Avery Golf Club, for the same price... and got everything, including awesome experience to be able to assess my golf skills. This is my exact experience period.
So your saying you didn't even play the course and are issuing out a 1 star. That's a bit extreme. We are just getting back open and our course is a fun track with a lot of elevation changes and great views of the lake. We will continue to get better with our amenities and course conditions. We do have restaurant service and will soon have two restaurant options for our players. Try a course out before you knock it next time.
I used to belong when it was Highland Lakes. Course still in very ruff condition. To make it good they will have to pour a lot of money to get things right.
Course wasn’t bad. They are putting money in it . Will be very good.
