Championship at Moon Valley Country Club
About
Moon Valley Country Club's Championship course features excellent conditions and a spot in Arizona's long golf tradition on a par-72 18-hole course first designed by Dick Wilson and redesigned by Bob Cupp and Associates. This golf course challenges all levels, playing 5,285-7,216 yards.
Moon Valley Country Club's Championship course begins on a par-4 371-yarder, requiring a drive left to see the green: bunkers guard front and left. The fourth is a par-5 511-yarder. Shoot a birdie. Keep the tee shot away from the right fairway bunker. Close on the 411-yard, par-4 18th, which requires an accurate drive to miss bunkers right and trees and water left. You'll face the course's most intimidating shot: a two-tiered green, featuring a left side four feet higher than the right, 15 yards deep. It's guarded front back by bunkers. The hole location on the right is difficult.
Bunkers block a green sloping front to back, making it tough to stop the ball on the surface.

Great course and good value.
This is a traditional course with excellent greens abd fairways. The staff were freindly and helpful. Features such as driving and practice areas were good. You get a private club experience for a public course price.
Great course
Wonderful place to practice and play. Glad that they are now open to the public.
True Greens!
The course has just come out of overseeding and is in good shape. The greens are true and roll smooth. The holes around the clubhouse are especially well maintained. Excellent value for the time of year.
Nice older country club
Although they had just finsihed overseeding, the greens were in decent condition, faster than expected, and a pleasant surprise. Fairways were still overgrown, but not expected this time of year. Nice mix of holes, various sets of tee boxes.
Good practice faciliites, however, I was sent away from the driving range without hitting any balls at around 1 pm because 2 young men were collecting balls on foot, as the machine was either not operational or they did not want to hurt the newly grown rye.
Course in rough shape and they allow FIVESOMES!
Historically, a beautiful course, but the economic downturn and Moon Valley's bankruptcy left the course dray and in disrepair. Many part of the fairway were bare, even right after overseeding. I can see that they're trying to improve the course, but it'll take a while to regrow the fairways and place grass around some of the greens that should be "rough" and are now clumps of dry mud. The most galling thing about our round was following a FIVESOME that walked the course. It was painful waiting for them after each whole. FIVESOMES have been allowed at MVCC for quite some time, but they should get rid of this immediately. It would make the course more attractive to members and guests alike. I hope they're able to improve upon this course that has fallen on tough times.
Great Course with lots of LPGA history
I had not played this course for about 10 yrs. Prior to that only 2 times as it is a members country club and I am not a member.
I love the course layout and the course was in pretty good shape considering we are just coming out of the hottest summer on record for Phoenix. The entire staff was super friendly and helpful. I recommend playing this course.
Private CC, not Private CC service
Upon booking this course I was very excited because it boasts itself as a private CC. Upon arrival, I had a feeling it was as private as they claim. There was no one at the bag drop. We had to walk our clubs all the way the the cart area before anyone notice us. Then, one of a group of three employees came over to assist as we were basically putting our bags on the cart. Upon check in, the pro shop attendant just informed us where the range was and that we needed to come back at our tee time. There was no starter so there wasn't anyone to escort you to first tee. The practice range is one of the worst I've seen. There isn't any grass for the first 250yds and the range balls are as bald as a que ball. Once we started our round things improved. Pace of play was good and the conditions were acceptable with overseeding starting soon. The highlight of the day was once we returned. The cart attendant, Lynn, was very nice and outgoing. He was the first sign of the "private" feeling you would expect from a CC like this. Drove us out to our car and loaded the clubs. Well done.
average course
Sand needs attention. Greens were fast and true. I think overall quality wasn't much better than papago. Green fee of $20 is why I went to play it. That is a good value. Would only play it again at that price.
No sand in the traps,
I really expected more being it was the moon valley CC. I guess they have some issues. Won't play it again.
Good value for the price
Course is in best shape than I have seen in awhile. Still has some way to go to return to original glory. Greens were in good shape.
Scenic
Played MVCC on 8/29. The course was a lot of fun and fairly challenging. It is by far the best conditioned course I have seen this summer. The fairways had no bare spots nor did the greens. Grass was plentiful and made it fun to play. Tee boxes were in great shape. The driving range was enormous and had some of the best grass on a range I have ever seen. The course itself is full of large, mature trees. If you stay away from those, you will be OK. My only complaint was the beverage cart service. The employee was rude and not once said "thank you" or "have a great day" when we purchased our items. We basically got no "hello" or any type of greeting. I know it doesn't affect the play-ability of the golf course, but when all the other employees encountered were friendly and attempting to go out of their way to make us happy, it was disappointing.
Overall, MVCC is a definite play if you live in the area.
love the greens and design
great course for the price, will come back again, staffs are awesome starting to the pro shop, cart attendant and snack shop . Will highly recommend to all my golf buddies.
Decent course
Although there are a lot of areas without grass, there are very few bare spots in the fairways or greens. Enjoyed playing the course, albeit i did not play well yesterday. Would play it differently next time, concentrating more on position than distance which is very lmportant on several holes. Greens are faster than I personally prefer and my putting cost me many strokes.
Solid course, superb conditions.
Shade is never overrated in Phoenix during the summer. Moon Valley has mature trees strategically situated near tee boxes for comfort and along the fairways for challenge. Hitting into those fairway trees makes for a difficult second shot so be forewarned. The super had the pins in tough positions for my round which made the putting and chipping even more critical to score. Playing from the blue tees should appeal to most good golfers (<10hcp) and the black will be just fine for those big boy hitters. Moon Valley is a good test of golf that is centrally located, has excellent practice facilities and a congenial and caring staff. Let's play two !
Great to play a private course (golf now.com is only public access).
Great to play a private course (golf now.com only public access). Minimal golfers on the course. Greens were in good condition. Only con was no beverage cart girl, but there are drinks at holes 5 and 15 as well at the turn. Just plan ahead. The private country club aspect, makes this almost a neglible factor. Would definitely play again, especially at this price point.
nice older course
Nice course, nice staff, good value. Not a hard course, but some very good holes. Who could ask for more in the summer?
course was a fun layout, especially knowing you played where the lpga played
The course was deserted as there was a slight drizzle, which made the playing fast and fun. The course was in great shape, the greens true and had enough trouble (mostly well placed bunkers) that made each hole a challenge. Would definitely play again if allowed to by the club.
good condition for az summers, very informative staff
Only hit one par five with two well hit balls. Favors a left to right tee shot from black tees. Greens and tees in good shape. Extra large practice facility.
All the pine trees make you feel like you are in the mountains.
Course was in nice shape compared to some upscale courses we have played lately. The fairway grass was pretty lush for the most part and the greens were medium speed and rolled true. I liked the layout and would play again for sure.
Country club? More like municipal.
I understand it's 100+ degrees every day, but this course was nothing special whatsoever. I read awesome reviews so I took advantage of the great Golfnow.com hot deal. When I got there, there might have been a sign for a bag drop, but it wasn't too helpful. I asked an outside attendant where to park, and he pointed me to the closest spot. After the round, i walked for 10 minutes to get back to my car.
The fairways weren't too fair and the greens were bumpier then a 13 year old forehead during the height of acne season. I will not go back here, nor will I refer it to any of my friends. I've played much better courses for the price of what it took to play here.
