Course maintenance
I have heard great things about this course. However my playing partner and I noticed that the maintenance crew needs to spend more time and /or money on maintenance of the grounds. The tee boxes were cluttered with broken tee's and maybe 90% of bunkers were not playable. Other than that, we felt that this course was in good shape.
Time machine needed
All sand is unplayable. Everything else is in decent shape. I did run into more clover then expected. Overall a good course with a few tough holes. Would of loved to play this course 5 years ago.
Course has poor conditions..
Lots of bunkers and fairways were terrible conditions and I understand the weather gave the impacts for the course conditions. Hope it recover soon!
Very pretty course and very challenging
Overall the course was in really good condition except for the fairway bunkers. The heavy rain early in the spring had messed them up quite a bit. Most of the green side bunkers looked decent. The greens were great and the fairways were a little wet from overnight watering, but dried out quickly (we started early). I always play this course when I go to Lexington and will continue to do so.
It is what it is...a great layout!
I, personally, like the layout of the course and I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and berate the conditions. Sure, the bunkers are unplayable at this time and are all considered ground under repair but the rest of the course is a gem. It may need a little polishing but it is still a good test of golf. The fairways are well groomed and the greens are smooth and playable-not too fast, rolling around 9 the day we played, and the rough is well, rough. Yes there are some weeds and clover but the course is still a great test from the tips at 7,000 yards. Sure it is a shadow of its former persona, as the number one public course in Kentucky, but it is still worth playing. Do yourself a favor and book a great rate on Golf Now and go play this course with an open mind. I imagine that you will be able to overlook a few of the shortcomings and see the beauty of the layout. Who knows, if more people come out to play maybe there will be more money in the maintenance budget and the bunkers will get fixed. Until then, I am still going to make the 2 hour trip to play this diamond in the rough several times a year-I'm just going to avoid hitting it in the bunkers!
What has happened to this course?
The Old Silo GC has always ranked as one of the top course to play in KY, but I don't see how. Weeds growing in bunkers or they're completely washed out have make almost every bunker unplayable. It is very sad to see how much the condition of this course has deteriorated.
Great course but needs some TLC.
The course was interesting and challenged you all through the round. Recent rains have played havoc with the bunkers as they were in terrible shape (muddy and or no sand in them). Otherwise the course was in great shape, with tight fairways and reasonable rough. It was clearly in the best shape of the three Lexington area courses we played this week.
GREAT POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!
Played this on a tues as the last day of a 3 day early May golf trip with my wife and another couple.Things looked so promising starting out off #1.. Driving up a sign said the #1 public course in KY..(MAYBE A FEW YEARS AGO) .I would have given this course a 5 star rating EXCEPT the bunkers were so evergrown with weeds/pebbles/stones that we played it as if no bunkers existed.I was only in a couple during the round but looking at them all we could do is shake our heads in disbelief....spend a liitle time and money on these things and the course is FANTASTIC!! Some really nice elevation changes and challenging holes/shots.....PLEASE FIX the bunkers to the same caliber as the rest of the course...Also a few porta potties could also help (especially for females when nature calls) A diamond in the rough in my opinion
Not Taken Care of
This course is a challenging course, somewhat long
but is not being taken care of. The sand bunkers were all in horrible shape, grass growing in them, rocks everywhere, just terrible shape. The rest of the course was in better shape but not what it could have been. There was no one watching the course and people were starting on number 9, cutting in front of people it was not what we expected. I had heard so many good things about this course and then to find it in the shape it was, was shocking. Mayb just a bad week for the staff at the course.
If it says it on the Internet it must be true!
Writing this the day of our return from Old Silo. This was our second visit through the stay and play and our fourth year playing Old Silo.
As many will read on other reviews, the course, club house and facilities are all well below par. It is very clear that there are finacial and management short falls.
The traps are embarrassing. The grass throughout the course was in very poor condition. Clover, dandelions, unmowed areas everywhere. The clover was so dense that any ball off the fairway was possibly lost. The carts no longer have GPS and are very dated.
The only staff we encountered was on Thursday. Four workers sitting in a maintenance cart next to a green. Not working, simply there for the entire time we played in and through. No attempt made to move as we played in. Not sure what they were doing? Simply poor on their part.
Although we had paid for unlimited play, We were only able to play 7 holes due to rain. Understanding staff does not control weather, they do control how customers are handled with such issues. When I asked if we could be compensated for our lost play, we were told that we could have a rain check for another round. Having come to Old Silo from Wisconsin (as they knew) I asked if we could apply that to one of our weekend rounds? The request was denied. However we could play very early on Sunday if we wanted to. Difficult as this was our travel day.
When we inquired as to the information on the website about the GPS, the staffer said, "we don't have those anymore. That's still on the website?"
We said it was and so was the #1 rating. What about the bunkers? He totally ignored it. Very poor customer skills. I would suggest the pro shop receive a full review. Again, management.
If not for the kindness of Jeremy and the other bar staff, our experience would have been far worse. He and the ladies were fantastic! Accommodating, helpful and warm. They get it. How come others don't?
In the end, we did get a $20.00 discount of a nearly $1600 weekend spent with Old Silo.
It's disapointing to see such a great golf course fall apart. Recipe for disaster: Poor ownership, lack of caring, no money, poor mangement, no leadership and zero understanding of how to create a destination experience.
Sadly Old Silo will fall victim to all they have created.
We will be seeking another venue for our annual golf trip.
Poor condition
Course is in poor condition. Bunkers are dirt, rock and filled with water
Great views throughout the course !
Great Course. Friendly Staff. Sand traps were being repaired on many holes. Great time with many fantastic views.
What happened?
Played the course several years ago and it was outstanding. I'm not sure what has happened to the place. The fairways and greens were good but the rough looked like it hasn't been mowed this year. They should just fill the sand traps in and plant grass because there was no sand left and most were full of water. Terrible shape for what was once a spectacular golf course.
Great For Lunch, Not For Golf
So here is the deal, this may have been the #1 Public Course in Kentucky in 2013 but there is no way it currently is. As mentioned in another review (and also told to us by a local) the course almost went bankrupt.
We planned a major outing at this course over the weekend and had 40 golfers looking forward to playing this tract for about 3 months now. Boy were we disappointed. Yes, they have had a ton of rain lately but you can tell the course has been unkept for a while.
The fairways were in good shape, as were the greens but that is about where is stopped. The rough was full of clover and dandelions and didn't appear to have been mowed for over a week. I can understand the issue with the rain, but it did not rain Friday or Saturday and we only saw one mower on the first 3 holes on Friday morning. Not a single mower the rest of the weekend. There was a 2 day window to do some mowing and they simply did not do it. They knew they had our group of 40 coming and there also appeared to be another outing of around 20 guys as well but simply mowing the course was not a priority for them.
The amount of range balls they gave us (for 40 golfers# was laughable and the quality of the range balls was less than desired. On Friday a friend of mine had a ball that had been mauled by a mower in his basket, he gave it back stating it should probably be discarded...saw them toss it right back into the bin. Also, the range could have been mowed as well.
Simply put, it was not worth the $45 we paid.
All that said, I really liked the layout. The course could be wonderful. The layout is nice and challenging, you can't just bomb away off the tee. You have to think your second shots and layups as well. With the bunkers as they were, we were taking drops so hitting a bunker wasn't bad #unless you lost it in the flooded ones) but if the bunkers were playable it would be even more challenging. Honestly, the best part was the food. The restaurant ran some daily specials and the cost of food was reasonable. The quality was very good as just about everyone who ate food from the restaurant liked it. I had the chili chees hotdog one day and the pulled turkey sandwich the next...both were very good and the homemade chips were delicious too. Honestly, if you are in the area around lunch or dinner you should really consider stopping in just to eat. The view from the back deck is also very nice and would accompany a meal nicely.
I would go back in a heartbeat if they decided to return the course to it's glory days. However, until then I will not be back.
Old Silo
The course layout is outstanding with many challenges and rewards for good shots. Apparently, the money situation is dire because the upkeep was below average. Specifically, poorly maintained sand traps and evidence of "critter damage" in various places on the course. Also, some cartpath upkeep issues. Facilities a bit on the average side as well. I wish it were in better condition, but I did enjoy the scenery and the challenge to make a good shot or pay a huge penalty.
Bad condition
The course is no where near what it used to be. Limbs where everywhere ,bukers no sand and had grass growing in them. Very sad compared to what it once was, especially for the price
One of my favorite courses in Kentucky
This course is a challenge ffrom the championship tee's. The fairways are always excellent and greens are above average. The layout is one of my favorites. Good practice facility.
Very good condition for January
Played on a warm sunny day (low 50's) in January. Fairways were a bit brown, but still played well. Greens had recovered from fall aeration, and were as good as one can expect for this time of year.
This is a fun and scenic course to play, any time of the year. Lots of variety in slope and elevation changes between holes. A few streams to cross/aviod, and lots of bunkers. Because of it's layout, I wouldn't recommend this for walkers.
Needs attention
Although this one of my favorite courses the bunkers were in terrible condition and the rough around the course was a little to tall, the fairways were in excellent condition and the greens were in good shape. The season is changing but a lot of golf to be played
A not so good play...
Have always enjoyed playing Old Silo until this time the rough was so bad could not fine a ball maybe someone else ball it just took away the fun of playing...They had worked on the greens which I understand they have to do that,we was not told before we played...Hope things will be better next time...
