Nice Layout Ok Greens HORRIBLE FAIRWAYS
Read the reviews decided to give it a chance . Played the Valley course. The layout is great Staff was SUPER NICE proshop and restaurant were great. Driving range is all dirt. Putting green was in Nice shape Ter boxes were Decent the greens were actually Good a little firm but that's normal. Now the REAL BAD the Fairways were rock hard and so bare in spots. The fairway grass in the majority of the fairways are really spotty. You will have to move the ball in the fairways being that you will almost certainly have a bare lie. The course layout is tough a few blind shots and a few holes are typical California target golf. You either hit the fairway or your Not playable. This course is in Major need of Water I'm sure it would help but there is damage that just won't be growing back. I paid the rate you get when not a Hot deal . Not worth it at all .their normal rates are so far from being worth it it's crazy Seems more people pay the mountain course so pace of play was good on the valley course. This course probably use to be Real Nice but now just not worth anything more than a drastically reduced Hot Deal price. I would recommend to just play elsewhere because you'll be disappointed. I'm a single digit handicap and would not play again unless it was free.
Great Course.
Great course. Great Staff. Great experience.
challenging course
has great view surrounded by mountains and hills.
The Mountain Course Runs
Played the Mountain course for the first time. It's very challenging particularly the back nine. The par 5 Hole no. 13 really makes your ball run due to the drought. There are some patches of hardpan but overall the course is in good condition especially the greens.
Green was bad
Fairway and green Condition was bad
Still great
Lack of water taking a toll on fairways but greens were fantastic
Hard as concrete
Amatuer golfers beware; the lack of watering at Robinson Ranch really came back to bite yesterday. Although the course "looked" fantacstic; the fairways were like concrete. Very little give in the surface and so club head was skipping off the surface time and again leading to mishit shots and ultimately lots of lost balls out of bounds. now I don't declare to be the greatest golfer but the conditions on the course did not help my game any. Aim to play straight every single shot and hope your ball finds something when it lands to slow it down or else you aren't staying in bounds or on the greens.
The greens were running way fast and controlling the ball again was not easy. You will need a very soft touch from anything more that 10 ft away.
Still a great course
Ok. Yes it's a little hard on the fairways but come on guys... we are in a drought. Prices have dropped accordingly. This is a beautiful course with a great design and layout. Always fun and always a challenge.
Valley Course
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in 4.5H. Played with Sharon, Gage & Jerrod. Parts of the round were as a single, a 3some and a 4some. The weather was hazy, low 70's and a little breezy.
Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I have encountered on every single visit here has been excellent. No beverage cart out today.
Most tees are decent with most divots already filled in. A few tees are poor.
The fairways have greened up and while still thin, the poa annua parts are beginning to fill in and actually have a little cushion. While still below average, they are definitely better than they were 2-3 months ago. Hopefully the rains???
The rough is thin and hardpan. The main thing penal about the "rough" here is that balls will roll right through it into red hazards. Hardpan, thin with occasional clumps of grass. The rough around the greens is lusher, mowed down and usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and good to play from except for the rocks mixed in. The green side bunkers are nicely maintained with high quality sand.
The greens putted medium speed bordering on fast and were smooth. Few ball marks because they are so firm. Approach shots were releasing, irons rarely stopped beside their ball dent.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Tough layout because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. Recommended only if you can get a deal, definitely not worth close to rack rate until the conditions improve substantially.
Thank you for a very informative and helpful review. Well done!
Pace of Play is King!
The staff were great! Especially Mark in the pro-shop.
I like the Mountain course. Aside from a couple of design flaws, it plays well. Greens are in good shape. The fairways are in winter state and need work. What is always significant, for me, is the pace of play. As a single, I got around in 2 hours and a half! Now that is golf! (and thank you to the two foursomes who let me play through!)
Valley @ RR
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx as a single in 3H 15M, teeing off @ 7 am. The weather was almost completely calm and sunny. Chilly when I started but had warmed up to around 70 by the time I finished.
The tees are more thin than lush with most divots already filled in.
I was told yesterday that the fairways are currently CPO because they were over seeded? When I think of over seeding, I think of different grass over dormant grass. Maybe this is nitpicking, but it appears to me like they just replanted some grass in what was previously the barest areas? The fairways have greened up but are still thin and still below average at this point. Until they grow out and mature, the clumps of grass that are meant to expand are actually difficult to play on, because the ball usually settles in the hard pan area low spot in between the clumps that are perhaps 3" apart. Hopefully with continued warm weather and some rain, they get their fairways back. They ARE beginning to look better even if they do not yet play better.
The rough around the fairways has also shown some recent improvement but is also still poor. It's penal in the regard that it will not stop balls from rolling into hazards. Hardpan to thin & clumpy. The rough around the greens is much lusher, mowed down and usually good to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and good to play except for an abundance of rocks. The green side bunkers are VERY well maintained with high quality sand.
The greens putted medium speed and were smooth with few ball marks. Firm but held approach shots well.
Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. Beverage cart out and beginning to make the rounds just as I was finishing. Beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I have encountered on every single visit has been very good. This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Recommended ? It's getting better, but they still need to get more grass on the fairways & rough before I would advise anyone to come play here.
Mountain @ RR
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) in 3H, 20M as a single using Forelinx teeing off @ 11 am. The weather was sunny, breezy and in the 80's.
The tees were more thin than lush with almost all divots properly maintained. Decent.
The fairways have greened up and improved somewhat. More hardpan than thin with extreme amounts of roll. However, do NOT read too much into this. They would have to double the amount of grass on them to reach mediocre status.
The rough around the fairways is a combination of thin/hardpan. The ball just rolls through the fairway and the rough into bushes, just poor. The rough around the greens usually has more grass and is usually Okay to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers do not seem like they are maintained. Extremely hard with rocks in them, almost no sand. The green side bunkers are the opposite. Nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens were smooth and putted quick. They were firm and held well struck approach shots. However, they are so firm that unless you can spin the ball, chips and pitches are an adventure.
The customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent as usual. Beautiful clubhouse. If you can get a deal and are willing to put up with ridiculous amounts of roll, the greens are really nice. Fun layout, but the conditions certainly do not justify anything close to rack rate. This course would be extremely challenging to walk. Constantly up/down hills and many holes have severe elevation changes.
The course layout is good, but many par 4's will probably not be driver holes for most players. Especially with thin fairways, it is a sheer guess on club selection off the tee on many holes on what to hit to get far enough but still be safe from rolling into hazards. I proved today that I could hit drivers, long irons and even middle irons through fairways. This course is plain no fun to play under hard pan conditions. Not recommended until they get much more grass on their fairways and rough.
RR Mountain
Played the Blues (6172/70.5/131) using Forelinx in 4H early morning as a 3some, matched up with Glen & Preston. The weather was partly cloudy and calm. In the 50's when I teed off, in the mid 60's by the time I finished.
The tees were decent, more thin than lush with almost all divots properly maintained.
I was hoping the fairways and the rough would have perked up after the rains. Maybe slight improvement, but they would have to improve 15% to get to thin. Hardpan with bare spots and extreme amounts of roll is more accurate. Occasional hints of green, some dormant grass, a few weeds and bare spots. You often could not tell where the fairway ended and the rough started. The rough around the greens is winter thin and generally OKay to chip out of.
The fairway bunkers were hard packed and good to hit out of. The green side bunkers were very nicely maintained with nice quality sand.
The greens putted medium fast, were fairly smooth, firm and held approach shots well.
I am surprised that the carts here do not have GPS, because the course is not that well marked for yardages. Some plates or stakes in the fairway at traditional 50 yard increments and some sprinklers are marked but often hard to find mixed in with the hardpan. The course layout is good for a target golf course, but w/o grass to stop the ball many shots are almost unfair. There are adequate water stations on the course. Beautiful clubhouse. The customer service from everyone I encountered was excellent as usual. No beverage cart today. Constantly up/down hills and many holes have severe elevation changes. This course would be extremely challenging to walk.
The greens are nice and it's a fun layout. However I would not pay more than $15 with a cart to play this course in it's current condition. Not recommended until they get grass on their fairways & rough.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in 3H as a single midday after playing through a couple of groups. The weather was fairly calm, overcast and in the mid 60's.
The tees are Okay. Reasonably level with most divots already filled in, more thin than lush.
The fairways have greened a little up after the recent rains, but are still hardpan to thin. They are maybe a little better than they were 1-2 months ago, but still well below average.
The rough around the fairways ranges from bare spots to thin and is also well below average. The rough around the greens is mowed down and winter thin.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and decent to play out of. The green side bunkers are well maintained with high quality sand but have inconsistent depths.
The greens were fairly smooth and putted medium fast speed with few ball marks. Firm but held approach shots well.
RR has a beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I have encountered on every single visit here has been great. I am surprised that there is no GPS on the carts here, because the course is not that well marked for yardages and what markings they have are often hard to find on the mostly hardpan fairways. This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. Great layout in poor condition about sums up this review. Recommended = Not not until they get some grass on the fairways & rough.
Getting better
I played in this course in last week and this week. The conditions of Valley is getting nice since raining. Try to test your golf skills... fun fun
good course gone bad
Almost unplayable. Fairway is dirt tee to green. Greens also dead and fast but OK.
RR Valley
Played the Blues (6469/72.4/139) using Forelinx in slightly over 4H with Jeff, Mark & Bruce midday. The weather was fairly calm, overcast and in the mid 50's.
The tees are Okay. Reasonably level with most divots already filled in, more thin than lush.
The fairways are still basically hardpan. A few areas have greened up after the recent rains and they at least have played better my last 2 rounds here. However, still below average.
The rough around the fairways ranges from bare spots to thin. WELL below average. The rough around the greens is mowed down and while much lusher, it's still winter thin.
The fairway bunkers are hard packed and good to play except for an abundance of rocks. The green side bunkers are well maintained with high quality sand but have inconsistent depths.
The greens were firm but held approach shots well. Fairly smooth and putted medium fast speed with few ball marks.
This course would be challenging to walk, fairly hilly. Several holes have severe elevation changes. Tough course because almost every shot has red hazard penalty stroke areas both left and right of your landing zone. RR has a beautiful clubhouse and the customer service from everyone I have encountered on every single visit has been great. Great layout in poor condition about sums up this review. Recommended = Not not until they get some grass on the fairways & rough.
Fairways are dry
Due to the water shortage, The fairways are bone dry and it is like hitting off bare earth.
I couldn't agree more, This course was never designed to have such hard fairways, the things are rock hard and it's probably a lack of watering AND proper maintenance. I can's tell you how many pure shots I hit down the pipe that would land and roll out 60, 80, 100 yards over into the hazard, gone. This course needs to be bought out and redone, that's the only hope...shame
