Whirlwind Golf Club - The Cattail Course
About
Whirlwind Golf Club features 36 holes across 242 acres. Wild horses and native beasts roam the landscape - so don't let them drag you away. While just 12 miles from the metropolis of Phoenix, Whirlwind Golf Club's Cattail Course takes golfers to a secluded and scenic environment, where desert tranquility and beauty is a silent playing partner throughout.
Gary Panks designed the courses at Whirlwind Golf Club. The par-72 Cattail measures 7,218 yards and beings on Arrow Shot, a par-4 413 yarder; the South Mountain Range's canyons will guide you, but shoot straight. Things get long on Two Mesquites, the second hole, a par-5 517 yarder, which does feature Mesquites, a staple for the Gila River Indian Community, used in construction, medicine and food.
Finish up on Last Hole, a par-4 450 yarder that offers a good test to close on, as it is the course's most demanding to drive.

AN ABOSOLUTE MUST!!!!
Being January, the rough were dormant but still very playable. Fairways were over seeded so very plush green and still ran great. Greens were very receptive and ran fast and true. Bunkers are shallow so a bit tricky to play out of. The layout is amazing!!! It's challenging but still fun!! Definitely plan on playing here the next time I am in town!!!
Course in very good shape. Fast greens
Really enjoyed the course. Very good for intermediate player. Greens very fast but smooth and well maintained. Will play again
Many rounds played here.... always the best.
Hey I suck, but I always have a good time here at whirlwind. Today was car tail, the more difficult of the 2 in my opinion. 44 front 47 back. Eh, I'll take it. Greens were true of not a little slow for this time of year. Fairways, rough, tee boxes all in great shape. If you've never been here, plenty of undulations on the course, but mostly flat. Great landscape, but a little tough to find errant balls. AND!!..... it's rattlesnake season so don't go looking out there anyway. Lol
I've played this course multiple times and the tees, fairways and greens have always been in great shape. Unfortunately the course had been over seeded recently so the overall conditions for this round were below standard and not worth the cost. Disappointed for sure.
Nice but SLOW
Great course, fantastic conditions, but putting two -somes behind several groups of 4somes is terrible planning. Since hole 1 there have been 4 groups on every hole. If it were hot my group would have left after the 9th hole
Outstanding
This was the first time I ever played this course , and have to say I was very impressed . The entire tract is in outstanding condition . I would highly recommend
Greens 8.5/10
I’m blessed to be able to play golf 2-3 times per week. I spread my rounds around the valley at different courses. However, I most often return to Whirlwind more than any other course. On July 22nd, 2020 the course (Cattail) was in Great shape. Best greens I’ve played this summer. I arrived only 15 minutes before my round, but last time I was on property the practice facilities are Sickk. Alignment sticks and all. During my round I must’ve seen 15-20 maintenance dudes on that 18 alone-and working their tails off. Most all the bunkers were hand raked. As opposed to every other course during Covid. Cart girls are chill AF, and their food/beverages prices are very reasonable. 2.1 handicap golfer.
My favorite course in south Phx
The Cattail Course has become my fav course in the South Phoenix area. Sure, there are some bare patches of fairway, but hey, it's July in Arizona.
The course was otherwise in great shape, the practice facility is very good and the food excellent.
Slow pace for a early Saturday
No ranger to speed up the group in front of us. When we called the pro shop, they said the group was on pace. Pace is 4 hours 10 minutes.
Players do not wake up for a 6:45 am round to play on pace! Get out, play early and beat the heat in Phoenix!
Play here a lot. It's amazing
Cat Tail review. Devils claw closed right now. The round includes the range, which is first class. Played from the gold tees (6800). Challenging but loads of fun. It's just so pretty out there. The natural landscape is stunning, but it will eat your ball of you're too far off the fairway. Greens were true. Not bumpy, about an 8-9 speed. Bunkers were a little hard, but it is a million degrees in phoenix right now. Can't wait to come back. Ps, watch out for rattlesnakes. I've only seen one. Curled up they will look like a huge cinnamon roll fyi.
Best Value for the Money in Phoenix or Tucson
Four of us played the Cattail Course this morning. Wow! Excellent practice facility and the course was in very good shape considering (it is July in Arizona). The greens were excellent. The beverage cart came around at least twice, plus there was drinking water about every other hole.. The food in the grill was also excellent.
We have played all over Scottsdale and Tucson over the past two months, and this is the best conditioned course yet. Kudos to Whirlwind!
