Westwood Golf course should be renamed water World!
Sad to leave a poor review but I am struggling to give any positives. I guess the welcome at the starter box was polite and cheerful, best part of visit.
I live local and wanted a few holes on a Sunday morning, teed off at 10:05 ish and didn't step off the 18th until 2:15. Pace of play awful, it's not even a competition! Over 4 hours is totally c£&p, no excuses.
The course condition, dire. More moss on the fairway than grass. As I mentioned earlier I live local, and know the weather conditions. The heavy shower we had last night cannot explain how sodden the course was. When build / designed they must have used heavy clay, as I can't understand how on a hill that has natural drainage that it can hold so much water. Standing water on the greens, flooded out bunkers, tee boxes and fairways soaked to a rediculous level. They should be considering offering mats to play off to protect the fairway as it was playing like winter golf.
My suggestions to Waterworld, sorry Westerwood, get some gravel and patch up the HUGE pot holes on the pathways, get some investment in soak always to assist in drainage. The only way this course will get better if they manage to improve the drainage, just glad my shoes are waterproof as they were pushed to their limits today.
For a local course I am sorry to say I will not be back.
A testing course for any golfer
Great round of golf at Westerwood. Fairways were a bit waterlogged here and there, but the greens were well groomed. A mixture of long and short par 4's makes Westerwood a nice course to play.
Thanks for your review and I'm delighted that you had a great round! We look forward to seeing you back up at the club again in the near future.
Refund
I didnt play as course was closed i am waiting a refund for this
Hi there. I'm sorry to see your comment. Can you please email me directly on westerwoodgolf@qhotels.co.uk with the date and time you played as well as your name. I can then try and rectify the matter for you. Thanks in advance.
Westerwood
Course very wet due to rain over past few days , a lot of walking between tees , and can be unsure sometimes of where to go next .
Thanks for your review and for being the first person I can remember describing the difficulty of the course as being fairly easy. I'm delighted that you were obviously hitting the ball great on the day that you played. We hope to see you back again soon. Thanks again!
Hire a buggy!!
Some nice holes and the greens were in excellent condition. The course was a bit heavy underfoot but in general in not bad knick. Although not a long course the distance between alot of greens and tees must be the furthest distance that I have ever played. I am so glad we hired a buggy otherwise it would of been a 4/5 hours for a two ball.
All in all not a bad course but layout does let it down.
Thanks for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed the benefit of a buggy! A couple of our 'green to tee' walks are enjoyable wanders through the trees, but are definitely much quicker in a buggy. We hope to see you again soon.
Thanks for your review and we hope to see you up at the course again soon.
Nice enough course & challenging but long walks between holes .
Nice course, good challenge, but long walks between holes and amenities outside golf poor.
Thank you for reviewing the course. Some of the walks are slightly longer, but none the less beautiful as a result. This is definitely why our buggies are so popular at the course however. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Thanks again!
Could be better
I have played this one a few times but I was disappointed that in the middle of July the quality of the greens was still poor and the winter coring was still evident. I think it struggles with drainage but looks like it requires more work. The layout is fine and it's interesting enough but falls short of other choices so probably won't rush back. After golf the hotel is very expensive at £5 a pint and food even less value so no redeeming news there. It could be a real winner with a lot of tlc but some way off just now im afraid.
Hi there,
Thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear you thought the course wasn't up to scratch. The coring was summer work as we endeavour to get on top of the course condition and continue to improve it year on year. I'm sure you will see the benefits of this work as early as next season. Thanks again and hope to see you up at the course again soon.
Thanks for your review - always appreciated!
Much improved
Worth starting by saying I am a member of this golf club for the sake of transparency.
The Westerwood had a reputation as a long, punishing course which was kept in poor condition for some years and I had found it disappointing on previous outings. A new greenkeeper has been in post for a good bit now though and his work is really starting to bear fruit, drainage is much better than before and the overall presentation of the course is superb. Improved condition, layout changes and sensible tee and pin placement makes this course a much more enjoyable prospect nowadays, hence I joined up this year.
The course is a great layout with a good variety of holes, some favoring straight hitting, others rewarding distance. It is laid out over a large area of ground so you're never in conflict with players on other parts of the course. It is quite a long walk, so a trolley or buggy is probably advisable.
I've always found the staff and other members to be great and it's a very accommodating place for visitors with none of the stuffiness of some other clubs I've played at.
Good facilities in the hotel too for visitors.
Hope word of the course's improvements gets around and goes some way to helping restore the course's damaged reputation.
Thanks for your comments and feedback and delighted that you're seeing the fruit of the greenkeeper's labour! Lots going on at the club at the moment. Thanks again!
Perfect
The course was in a 10 out of 10 condition. I've played the course about 10 times before, the course layout is absolutely fantastic and the condition is the best I've seen. It's a great course for all handicappers. I'll definitely be back a few more times this season.
Thanks for your comments. We hope to see you back soon. We're about to be offering a 3-month trial membership for £99, so that might be a better option if you're going to play a few times. Just ask about it in the shop when you're next up. Cheers!
course extremely well presented compared with other courses in the area. Fairways and greens in excellent condition.
The 15th has to be seen
Cracking course. Very scenic and a good challenge. The par 3 15th being the pick of the holes. Only down side was the number of blind shots. A bit of a tough one if you have never been round before. A bit of a trek between some of the greens and the next tee. In great condition though and would definitely play again
Wet and boggy
Course wet and greens spiked and sandy . No buggies allowed on 4,5,6 even on the fairways due to waterlogged . Could be doing with more direction markers on some holes it's a hit and hope
Overall not as good as expected
Must be dry, or must be avoided
Played here with a couple of friends. It had been dry for almost a week yet this course was still very heavy underfoot, really poor in areas. The greens had been spiked so heavily it was like playing marbles when putting. The bunkers were solid, so much so, there was about 6" of standing water in some. Genuinely had no idea at times how shots would be received by the surface which spoiled the round for us. I was looking forward to playing this course but felt the layout was quite poor. On arrival we were told buggies weren't allowed on three holes which meant we had to carry three cart bags around and one player was carrying an injury which caused further inconvenience.
The off course facilities were great with friendly staff, but that wasn't enough to make me want to return unfortunately.
Hi there. I appreciate you taking the time to write a review of our golf course. I'm going to try and answer your points as best as I can:
1. I think you may have been the fourball at 10.12 with 2 buggies? Our tee sheet was completely full on Sunday from 7am with people teeing off every 8 minutes right up until your tee time and thereafter until 1pm with only a couple of tee slots available. This may account for your round taking 4 hours and 3 minutes. I must say however that I would regard this as pretty reasonable for a course that busy and one that is as long as ours.
2. As you allude to, the weather has been particularly bad this 'Summer'. We have actually had over 100ml of rain here this month alone - the wettest August for as long as we can remember frankly. To have the course open and be getting the generally positive comments we receive about the course is testament to the hard work that our green-keepers pride themselves on. Granted, drainage could always be better in inland Scotland, but as an example of our course's ability to cope with the weather, we recently had a very large party come and use our course due to their course (local to us) being shut - they were delighted they could get a game.
3. The paths are an ongoing work. Again, the level of rainfall has a detrimental effect on our paths, much like potholes on our major road networks. We do however constantly strive to improve them.
In summary, I hope we've managed to answer some of your points with sensible commentary and I would happily sit down with you and discuss your concerns over a coffee if you liked. We're always keen to help and hope that we could convince you to return and see if your experience could be improved upon. Please email us direct on westerwoodgolf@qhotels.co.uk if you'd like to take us up on the offer of a chat and a coffee. Thanks again!
