Villano
Vellano is a semi- private facility that seems unsure how to welcome non-members. You can clearly see the difference in treatment.
Good Value
Course is challenging, in good shape, greens excellent, one where you need to know where not to hit the ball. Mid week value is great, pace was good. Definite inclusion in rotation of courses to regularly play.
Some of the purest greens around.
The greens at Vellano are as pure as it gets, fast and true. This course offers a great variety of holes ranging from wide open to very tricky of the tee. The greens are quite undulated and are challenging due to their speed. Beautiful views.
The course plays firm due to the draught and you might find same bare patches on the fairways and semi-rough, but the greens are still quite receptive. I'll defiantly be back sooner than later.
Vellano
Awesome Vistas. The extra $10-$20 paid vs local muni's is well worth it. Worth playing there on weekends
Tough course; terrible customer service
We called in advance to ask if we could do a five-some. We were told no problem. We get there early for our 3:08 tee time and were told that we would have to wait until 4 to go out as a five-some. I could understand if it were busy; however, there was no one there. We teed off around 3:20 with no one behind us. There was a twosome in front of us, and a twosome in front of them. Pace of play was incredibly slow. We had to wait on every tee box. Around the 6th hole, another twosome caught up to us. We asked if they wanted to go ahead of us, but they declined because there was nowhere to go (twosomes were moving very slow). Around the 7th hole, the marshall came around (two young guys, maybe 18 years old), and hassled us for two holes about playing as a fivesome.
To make matters worse, there was no cart-girl or anyone running snacks or drinks around the course. The one place that had an ice machine and water did not have any cups, or any ice in the machine. It was 90 degrees outside and dry. At the turn, we went into the bar to get a drink. It was like a ghost town in the clubhouse. I rang the bell several times for service at the bar, but no one came. I wandered the halls looking for an employee, but never saw one.
Overall, very rude staff and very poor services. How can a course have no cart-girl, no ice, and no drinks? The course itself is a nice layout, but very challenging. The conditions were not great; very dry and dirt patches here and there.
You couldn't pay me to go back.
Too hilly
Whereas the course itself is in a fair condition, the entire property sits on a very steep hill. So, there are holes where the elevation change can be mire than 200 to 300 ft.(!) Many blind shot, and many carries that require 200 yd. of flight or more, even on par 3s. Even if you're a low handicapper (say 12 or below), this is a difficult course. High handicappers should stay away, or play from the white tees. I played on Saturday, and it took almost 6 hours due to all the waits on more hilly holes.
Greg Norman is Sorry
Surely "The Shark" regrets putting his name on this course. The layout design is very poor as his team tried to make the best out of inhospitable land not suited for mankind. Bring your "Sherpa" & "Rifle" as you will navigate Billy-Goat hills, narrow fairways, blind shots, Bulls-Eye targets, sloping landmass, deftly judged carry-shots and on and on. Combine this with poor service, lack of staff (they have limited funds), no range balls, lack of water, food & drinks and cart service....you create a TOXIC experience. One more important item. Should you survive the lack of nutrition available and heat surely the 6+-Hour wait and grid-lock on holes will test your patience and can drive one insane. Suggest you bring your own food, massage therapist and psychologist to get through this ordeal.
Another Great Day of Golf!
Great Course! Great course design! Nice grass driving range. Staff is friendly. Wish the carts had GPS. The cart beverage girl was to be seen only once through the whole round. Then at the end of the round at 6:00 we went to the "19th hole" for a drink and food and no one was there and this was on a Saturday. Otherwise we had a great day playing Vellano!
A must play at least once
Had a great time even though it was challenging and being my first time. Lucky for me got paired-up with someone who played the course before and had some course knowledge especially for a number of holes you need to lay-up or keep left or right based on the fairway slopes. You will loose golf balls if you don't hit your tee to green shots correctly. I will play this course again!
One of the worst golf experiences ever!
Took advantage of an expensive course on hot deals for $30, seemed like a no brainer. Tee time was at 12:30 at 4:00 I was on the 11th hole. Litteraly two groups on every tee sometimes three. Course is beyond challenging, bordering on unfair on a few holes. Lot of false fronts and slanting fairways, taking good shots almost out of bounds.
Challenging target oriented
Fairways dormant in winter/ tight lies
Pace slow (too challenging for ave golfer)
Tiered greens with tough pin placements
Will punish you for sloppy play
Pretty course with lots of elevation changes
They Just Don't Care About Your Experience
played here and it was crowded. There was no marshal or even marginal effort to help with the pace of play. We had twosomes taking longer than foursomes. Empty holes between groups. The topper was the group who watched their buddies on the green before teeing off on the next hole. Just a poorly managed day that led to a bad golf experience. The last time I played here there were similar congestion issues and poor oversight. I cannot daily I won't play here again, but it will be a long while.
Solid track
The Bermuda grass was dormant but the greens played true. Fun day
Worth every pennies
Played on 12/13/15 Beautiful course and very challenging at time that I played the course fairway very dry and brown but the green are nice, this is my second time here and will be back for more.
Don't wear jeans!
Amazing course with great views! Course nestled in the Chino Hills in a gated community of multi-million $ homes. Has some nice pair 5z - We love the course & would play there again!
Country Club like Atmosphere
A beautiful course in a very upscale neighborhood. Your first clue is going through a gated entrance. Although they have cut back watering the fairways, they are still very playable. One confusion is that my Golf Buddy showed the first tee box as 10. Apparently, they swithced the front and back nine but didn't tell the golf course vendors.
SLOW
Pace of play ruined this gem of a course. They do not group players in foursomes, but rather let singles and two-somes out during PEAK weekend hours. say what you will, but this is poor management. A call to the clubhouse regarding the group in front of us being a hole and a half behind yielded a recommendations to skip a hole and jump in front of the slow group. Not an acceptable solution IMO.
The course itself is great. The greens are smooth, fast and receptive. The fairways are browned out likely do to the winter season or the drought, but are still playable. One complaint would be a few tee boxes were a bit sandy or the grass was too young and did not have strong roots. It's a great track on a nice piece of land with fantastic views.
Let's hope this course doesn't turn out like Lost Canyons.
Discount golf to semi private course
Played on a blustery day with winds kicking up to 25 - 35 mph. That's pretty difficult on this course with lots of elevation change and tight fairways. But, overall it was a good day. The fairway suffered from the drought, but still playable. Some of the holes require local knowledge (like the first hole) as you need to be aware of how far to carry and to accommodate the roll out on dry fairways. There are also some blind tee shots. The course is tricky for beginners and novice players. Overall, this course was very enjoyable.
Vellano on a windy day ~~~
Played on Thanksgiving weekend (2015).
The course, like many other courses, has fallen victim to the recent drought condition. So, no negative rating for the course condition.
The layout is very tricky and requires couple of plays to get the feel for the yardage as this is very much a target course. There are many blind tee shots and severe elevation changes. The greens were in decent shape, but the break and speed on some of the holes were almost impossible to read. Starting with a tricky #1 par 4, it's a down hill with shaved fairway where trying to get a 100 yard layup shot is a challenge. Strike the tee shot too well or too much draw buys some nastiness. Even the green is severely sloped from back to front so any long shots will severely punish you. The afternoon wind also plays havoc with your shots especially on back nine. Although their #1 handicapped hole was a par 3, I thought their #17 par four was more challenging. Sitting on an elevated tee box with houses to the right and waste area to the left, solid tee shot from the blue left me with a 130 yard approach shot. Believe me when the hole got my attention while standing over the ball on the tee box. All in all, this is a fun track and deserves second or third look. El Nino should bring some green grass back to the course (and the surrounding area). Take your time on the green as that's where you can save several strokes through out the round. Definitely worth a round.
Slow Play
The course was in great shape, the facilities are very nice. The pace of play was extremely slow. The first nine took 3 hours. When we got to the turn, there were 3 groups waiting to tee off # 10. The back nine took just under 3 hours to play.
I have played there twice before on a Friday and did not have these issues.
I will not play at Vellano again if the pace of play matches yesterday's pace.
