About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Champions Club @ the Retreat
Played the Blacks (6742/73.6/140) with RGM2525 on a Golf Moose 2 person voucher that included a cart in 3H, 45M. We played through one 2some that held us up for a few holes and were not pressed AD, so POP was very relaxed.
My 1st time here. The layout reminded me of Lost Canyons in Simi Valley, but in better condition. Plenty of trouble and forced carries and the course is constantly up/down hills. Would be a very challenging course to walk.
The tees were in nice shape overall, well maintained.
The fairways had good coverage, usually lush, occasionally thin.
The rough also had good coverage and was about 50/50 lush/thin.
I was not in any sand traps, but they looked to be well maintained in good condition. They are also plentiful on this layout.
The greens were firm and medium fast. The large green complexes have alot of slope and there can be some nasty pin placements. My only complaint with the course today would be a few of the pin placements. There were at least 2 different greens where if you missed from any angle, you had at least 6' coming back up the hill. Putts that rolled to 1" and stopped would come back 6'? IMO, it a poor job of placing pins if it is impossible to stop the ball at or even relatively near the hole!
The customer service was excellent. Very efficient check-in. Our cart died on #3, and they had us a new cart before we even finished playing the hole.
I can definitely see the high slope rating. Challenging to club correctly with the often severe elevation changes and the wind swirling around in the canyons. I thought the course and layout were good to excellent overall but local knowledge & experience would definitely come in handy. Knowing what club to hit and still be safe on a few of the holes that you cannot hit driver or knowing where to aim on a couple of blind shots come prominently to mind. Many shots require precision on both distance and direction or your ball is gone on this layout. Very challenging course where you need to think about your next shot in detail before you play this shot from many par 4/5 tees to green.
I would definitely play here again if in the area.
Course lay out excellent
Had a good time playing this golf course. Beautiful course
Challenging Course
I never golfed at this facility before, but I was blown away by the beautiful scenery that surrounds this course. Very challenging course with a lot of uneven lies. If you hit it straight then you're good. If you don't, bring a lot of golf balls.
The hills have golf balls.....
This course is an adventure from start to finish. The course sets up to make you question every club selection while admiring the breathtaking views from so many holes. You almost feel like the course is battling you and your fighting it up hill the entire time...literally...the elevations are really exciting and will test your nerves as well as your aggressiveness. Just be carful...these hills are over run by golf balls from shanks to hooks to a great tee shot that just sailed to far! Love this course...if they made this course more affordable to the average golfer they would probably get more business. The few times I've gone they have been really slow which is great for me when I'm playing but bit good for business.
Beautiful golf course in the canyons.
Challenging course for all golfers. There is a combination of elevated tees and greens, just enough water and lots of natural hazards along and through the fairways. Fairways vary in width with downward ones more challenging to stay in bounds.
Great course great value
This course is fantastic! It's very difficult, not for beginners or average hacks but it's in great condition and is practically empty on weekdays.
Champions club
The guy in the pro shop did not have record of my golf now tee time.. I had confirmation email which I showed him. The course was very fun and in great shape.. Tough greens, I love the country club feel.. They give you the cart and you are free to druve into the parking lot or anywhere else without the cart gps sensor shutting you down like they do at eagle glen. This is my favorite course among the corona 15 freeway courses!!
Champions Club at The Retreat
The course is extremely challenging for any level player. Also you shouldn't keepscore and you will have a better experience. It is extremely frustrating for any golfer to play consistently on this course also when it is hot and humid very difficult to maneuver the many hills you will be on.
Keep the ball in play...
This is a real target golf course. If you miss the fairways then you will be in for a long day. There is a premium on hitting the fairway and you dont have to always pull out the driver. The course is in decent shape, but the fairways are starting to turn brown and drying up because of the drought. My advise is that if you are a high handicapper or can't keep your driver straight then I wouldn't play this course. And if you do I suggest you bring a few dozen balls.
Champions course for sure
Very challenging course for all levels of golfers. Highly recommend this course for play!!
Nice and dificult
Course and facilities are in top shape, this course is difficult for me but very entertaining.
Good course but lots challenge
Too challenge for average player, but it's fun to enjoy the views and air! Nice course.
Requires good course management
Hazards- bring a extra sleeve of balls, there is a ravine that runs thru this course and demands good course management and skills. It may not be a good course for a beginner. The course has steep hills so lots of side hill lies.
Challenging hill course
Course was well maintained and greens were great. Lots of hills very challenging the first time but better second time around. Wish the gps was. Larger and showed were the other golf carts were as they can be hidden at times
I will defiantly be back
Good golf course requires accuracy!
Like it, especially I am not a long hitter. consider a short course with certain degree of difficult in few holes. recommend to all level of golfers, bring some extra golf balls!
Afternoon golf outing
Had a great time. Had a tee time at 3:10 in the afternoon and finished with nearly 20 minutes of daylight left. The greens were challenging, but fairways and tee boxes were in great condition.
Amazing Day
It was a Real Treat!! Our first time there, the staff was very polite and accommodating. The first two holes will make you think about this game of GOLF. The views from each Tee were incredible on all 18. The Course Book was very helpful. We left a feeewwww balls on the course. But found a bird on the 12th. Thank you for the challenge, we will be back!! M& J
Nice course for good golfers.
This course is not long but you have to play to targets on the fairway and to the correct tier on the greens. The course was in good shape with roll-out on the fairways. The greens were fairly fast and true.
If you are on the wrong part of the green, a 2-putt can be difficult. This is a fun course to play if you usually keep your drive in play.
The pace of play was around 5 hours, about average for a nice Saturday in So. Cal.
Extremely difficult coarse for high handicapper
This was my first time playing this coarse and it was excruciating. Greens were really fast. Pin placements made it tough too. I lost over a dozen balls. I don't know if I'll return. On a par 3 I was on with my approach shot, didn't hit the putt long enough and rolled off the green and into the rough, chip shot short and rolled back to my feet again. Ended with a 7! The courses name lived up to itself. You need to be a champion to play here or you'll need to go on a long retreat to get over this course.
The Retreat has a lot to offer...
This course has a lot to offer for both the novice and more experienced golfer. My golf partner is a more experienced player, I am just getting back in the game. I understand that the course has undergone some changes to make it more suitability for a larger audience. Its is obvious some of the changes from the Par5 to Par4 and the removal of some sand traps. But there are still plenty of hills and left dog legs to keep you on your A game. Great landscape and view worth the trip down the 15!
