About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Nice but challenging course
It is a course on the hill. Missing the fairway means ball loss.
Pass it on by
Like the title says "pass this on by". Not worth the price at free. 5+ hours of misery. We started on the blue tees and finished playing the red tees because that was the only place to get a level lie on the entire course.
This is not a thinking mans course as Jack would put it. It is just plane stupid with blind shots and no designated landing zone. We even printed the pro tips from the site and they were of no help.
Great course, amazing views.
I always wanted to play this course, this is a really nice course. Some shots have to be placed in the right spot, greens were great, views are amazing. I loved it.
Challenging but still fun
Definitely not a beginners course. I played this course for the first time and I was a little scared by the reviews I read the day before. After playing the course it's not as hard as the reviews claim it to be. Don't get me wrong, it's still challenging. It was still fun to play being that you have to carefully plan your shots. It made you think, and I liked that. Bring extra balls, I'm a bogey golfer and I lost probably 5 balls. Greens are multi-tierd, tough, and fast. Be ready for a few more 3 putts than you're used to. Pace-of-play was slow, I wish they would space groups a little further apart knowing that this is a tough course. There was a wait on pretty much every hole. Staff was friendly and attentive however the beer cart girl's service was slow. We didn't see her until the 9th, which doesn't do any good. Then again on the 18th, which also doesn't do any good. But not a big deal, maybe it was just bad timing.
Overall it was a good experience for a good price ($53 for Sunday morning) and I'll be back.
An experience to remember
First time here, and our cart GPS died! Playing this course "blind" was very challenging! The condition was better than I was led to believe it would be... just coming out of Winter conditions, and quite acceptable. Every hole was a series of "guesses'... what to hit off the tee...where to hit it, how much does the elevation changes affect club selection, etc ... and the greens were typical Nicklaus designs... very shallow front-to-back, with the length right-to-left! Wicked slopes and breaks. Drop-offs on two sides (into lost ball conditions). Bottom line? This is absolutely no course for beginners, as advertized. But we picked our way around, lost a few balls, found a few, and had a wonderful time! We'll play it a LOT different (and smarter) next time! Loved it!!
Post Play Review
One of the challlenging courses I love playing. Is not an easy course but this is the kind of golf course I like playing again and again.
Fun course.
This course isn't for the first time golfer or one that hasn't played in a while.
Very challenging and fun layout. Greens are fast but not super fast like Hidden Valley's greens.
Extremely difficult; very fun.
Great course. Great staff. Incredibly difficult tee and approach shots. Greens above average difficulty. Round was super slow, partly due to difficulty of course. We played behind a college team, who spent most of their time looking for lost balls!
Greens are rolling nice
The course was looking pretty good. Some bad spots around the fairways, but the greens were running great.
I see why the fee was low
Was not expecting much from an IE low cost experience. However, this was disappointing. Granted it is"winter" and it had rained the night before, but the course was in terrible shape. Greens were inconsistent throughout. One green was being overseeded but was still open for play. The rough was essentially weeds mixed with dormant grass. I thought it was due to the time of year. However, when I used the facilities and those were dirty I realized this is all a upkeep issue.
The cart had an ice chest but no Ice. The range was unkept. The GPS went in and out. This course was meant to have a private club feel in a housing tract setting. It appears the Country club has that price for a reason.
Then when you get passed all of that and try to hit your approach shot to the green, the pin is wrapped way back in an impossible location for anyone less than a tour player. All told the round was not as fun as it could be. The facility was not as relaxing and pleasant as it should be. In the end I won't play here again b/c my local muni track is just more fun. And just as cheep. I'll try Eagle Glen instead.
Course was challenging it brought out the best in ones mental game
Course made one plan ones game as well as club selection an important part of the game. Greens were in excellent condition. A wonderful experience with challenging drives and puts.
Dead grass
All of the fairways and rough are dead. The greens are hard and fast. The course is usually very nice but currently it is pretty bad. I won't be coming back until the fairways are green again.
This course is not worth playing at any price
A very stupid design with poor conditions layout is to difficult for even an advanced player. only 6 holes are considered playable
Great day of Golf
This course is not only beautiful but challenging.
Course has many varieties of challenges
I believe that this the third time I played this course, but, somehow, the course played completely new to me. I find the course offered many different challenges that I cannot find in other courses in the LA area. Many holes required rather precise shot placements. I did not have a particular good day, but I certainly will come back test myself again
Challenges
If you like to be challenged at Golf. If Golf has not already kicked your butt.........go Golf here, but be warned, this Golf course is not fair to anyone's game. If you want to see if you can make ridiculous shots and putts then go here and just remember to enjoy the day, the fellowship and the challenge of golf and not to focus too much on your score or you will be miserable
difficult greens
The course was damp from the recent rain. The greens were almost impossible to one putt. Every pin placement was in a slope and if you didn't make the putt is would trickle down to were to putted from. Luckily I got a great deal on golfnow.com because I wouldn't pay full price to be so frustrated on the greens. Numerous time I would be on the green on regulation but would 2 or 3 putt. I would golf here again if I get that same price.
