Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest
About
Opened in 2010, it did not take Cape Fear National at Brunswick Forest long to be ranked as one of the "top 10 best courses you can play in North Carolina" by Golfweek. It was quite a feat to create a course that stood out in an area known for its exceptional golf, but designer Tim Cate mastered the challenge. Although it was carefully carved through acres of forest, the trees don't play much of a role on the course. Sand and water will be the most formidable challenges on this links layout. Golfers can expect forced carries over native marshes and massive waste bunkers strategically placed throughout. There are challenges in store for players of all skill levels but Cape Fear National is also a fair and straightforward test with no hidden hazards.

Terrible service in pro shop
Blake in pro shop is NOT a good choice 2 have on the desk. When we arrived, outside staff was friendly, courteous, n welcoming. They advised due 2 heavy rains the nite before, it was cart path only. We respect & appreciate management decision to maintain their course. Unfortunately, we can no longer play cart path only. We had called earlier to confirm our tee time. Blake had an opportunity to advise cart path only. He did not. When confronted with this, his reply: "if u didn't ask about course conditions, I wouldn't have said anything". Really? Obviously, not only does he lack common courtesy, he is not representing your course in the manner in deserves.
Wonderful course
My first time playing the course was great. A storm had come thru the day before I played so the course was very wet, but that didn't stop me from really enjoying a great golf course that was in exceptional condition.
Would definitely play again if I'm ever back in Wilmington.
First time at CFN
Magnificent course! Well maintained and manicured, even around the edges. Put aside the recent aeration ( still best greens I saw all week) and 4” of rain. Cart path only , understandable. Better course than Thistle. Worth the drive from Sunset Beach
Outstanding Course
This was one of the best public access courses I have played in a long time and especially for just under $50. Greens had been aerated about a week ago so those weren’t great but can’t blame the course for that. Otherwise, conditions from tee to green were outstanding. Beautiful layout as well. Many choices of teas for various skill levels. Definitely want to play again when back in the area.
Great course, awesome layout.
We played the course about a week after the greens were punched. I knew ahead of time this was the case so that won’t factor into my review. This is a BEAUTIFUL course. I loved the layout. Nice open fairways and a challenging setup. I will be back to play again. Customer service was excellent.
I thought I was at Pinehurst
What an amazing course! The way the architect used the region’s natural flora and fauna and combined it with the NC sand was truly beautiful. My only regret is that I live out of state and won’t be able to play it often. Well done all around!
Good, challenging course.
Very good, challenging golf course. The greens were really firm but putted true. Very windy due to the site of the course, which combined with the firmness, made holding greens very difficult. Overall, really fun and fair test of golf.
Pace of play not great. Being a tough course, that complicates things, but there was no ranger and the front 9 took almost 3 hours with four groups regularly on the same hole.
Staff could use some improvement. Charged our group a cart fee for an individual who suffered a broken ankle between reservation booking and day of play. Understand that, but was disappointing as we had called earlier in the week and they said it would be no problem for him to have a cart. No beverage cart on course which was unfortunate given the slowness of play. Called the pro-shop to ask and they said “if we see her, we’ll let you know.” Also, placed an order for burgers ($13 each, WOW!) on hole 8 for the turn. Arrived and the staffer said, we didn’t receive the order and “what do you want me to do, it’s human error.”
The course is definitely worth a try, but don’t expect much from a staff/hospitality side. Seemed very indifferent which was frustrating given the price of golf and food/etc.
You Call This A Golf Course?
I call this NIRVANA! Wow, what a great course. Had a fantastic time and will definitely play next time I am in the area.
Never Disappoints
This course is really one of my favorites in the area. Greens are fast, fairways are overseeded so they are green and lush. My game was on that day which helped for the enjoyment.
Can be a little slow to get around sometimes but not today we were right at 4 hours. Staff for the most part is always friendly except for the golf pro. Almost seems like its a bother for us to be there. Other than that I would highly recommend this course. Must Play
Top notch conditions.
Challenging but fair layout. You hit a bad shot it costs you like it should. Practice and chipping greens for warming up are appreciated.
Beautiful Course
Was very impressed with this beautiful course! The conditions were pristine for early march and the bent grass greens were perfect! I reside and work at Pinehurst and this course reminded me of # 4 and # 8! The Golfnow rate was was excellent! Very accomodating and friendly staff! I will def be back!
Unbelievable Patch!!!
Played this course for the first time and was not disappointed in the least. Everything from the time we got there was perfect. If there was a negative it was that the range was a good drive away from 1st tee but that was the ONLY thing I would've changed.
Starter was very informative, course was challenging but fair and pace of play was under 4 hours on a busy Saturday morning at 9:50am. Greens were rolling true and quick. Looks like the ball marks could be an issue when play increases but they were smooth today. I highly recommend this course!
accuracy required
Course is tight with lots of trouble. Overall condition was great except for ball marks on greens. Need to have solid game or one way miss as little room for error.
Only major complaint was we ordered food from cart on 8th tee when prompted but when we made turn the grill was not open as it doesn't open until 1100 on Saturday. Very disappointing and not sure why it opens so late on weekend.
Luckily there was a cart girl but she didn't get to our group until 14 and we were starving.
Fun,Fun,Fun
This course is really nice. First off, the fairways were beautiful! The natural areas were perfectly groomed. The course layout forces shorter hitters to think about shot placement and longer hitters to be accurate. Club selection on the tee box comes into play often. The greens were feeling the effects of a summer of use but we're still very lethal with subtle breaks and tricky pin placement. Players can choose to lay up, cut corners or go for it quite often. The staff and practice facilities were A 1. The cart paths excellent and the carts are state of the art with GPS and food ordering capabilities for your arrival at the turn! You have to play this course when in town! I had a lot of fun playing a challenging course...what more could you ask for?
Bring extra balls
This is not the course to play if you're not driving the ball well. Great design. Greens and fairways are in great shape. Greens were moderate fast but definitely not too fast. Lots of bunkers with sheer edges. If you find yourself close to one of those edges, you'll be hitting away from the green.
Played the front nine in fairly good time but hit a roadblock on the back and had to wait on most shots.
Beautiful scenery and wildlife. Saw a turkey, a couple snakes, hawks, etc. Will definitely be back to this course.
Great course despite miserable staff
Awesome course layout and condition. Seems like they need some major tuning in regards to staff and minor details. They could use some signage directing you in and out of the course. Our cart was a disgusting mess and wasn't cleaned very well from prior players (old wet granola bar in console and candy bar wrapper in the sand mix bucket. Asked for an extra towel to clean it out and was told to use the one they provided. Cart attendant didn't bother to ask which player was driving, just threw the clubs on the cart and we swapped on our own.
Starter was less than cordial (gray hair and mustache), seemed pretty disinterested in being there. Seemed like he was doing us a favor by allowing us to play.
Course itself was awesome, greens were perfect so they have that going for them.
They just need to work on other areas to bring the overall experience to the level of the course.
LOVE THIS COURSE!
One of the top places to play here in Wilmington. I love this course. Pretty challenging. Scenery is killer. The course is just set up so well. Greens are the best, bunkers are challenging to get out of. It isn't the toughest course here in Wilmington but is the most beautiful as far as scenery. I play here and Masonboro often and recommend these courses to my hotel guests all the time. A dandy to play. Even if I wasnt a local I would still pay the regular price for this course. So worth every penny. Staff is friendly, members are awesome, just everything is awesome.
Well conditioned course
Interesting holes, all different, good course conditions
Great Course!
This course is magnificent and very challenging. The first few holes are a breeze but after the 5th hole it becomes fairly challenging with hazards. My only complaint was being paired up by the club. This is the first time I've ever been paired with another party so it was totally surprising.
