Needs alot of attention
I played this course at the beginning of the season and it was in great shape. Not sure what happened since then. Could be from the river flooding, but the course is in terrible shape. The fairways have large patches of dirt, to the point that you have to move your ball several feet just to find some grass. It looks like they are trying there hardest to bring it back to life, but its going to take some time. Hopefully during the winter/spring it will have time to recover. It needs several weeks of no play to get back to good. On a good note, the price is good, and the greens are in really good shape.
Difficult course in poor condition
We had played this course early in the season and I wanted to return because it is an interesting and challenging layout. Unfortunately, the fairways had been pretty much decimated with bug damage and the tees were only so-so. The greens, however, were in pretty good shape. It has a 129 slope from the whites and it plays long even though it is a par 70. The rough was penalizing and the greens have a lot of break. The former name of the course was "Cliffside" and thus many of the holes have vast elevation changes. Not a course for high handicappers. A good challenge if you think your game is up to snuff.
Great views
Staff was very accommodating with getting us out quickly, and honoring our request to just play as a twosome. Great views, nice course but in very poor condition. I know they had a lot of flooding damage about a month ago, so Im not sure if they're still recovering from that or this is just the norm for them. Overall a good value.
Interesting Layout, Terrible Upkeep
The course has a lot of potential with the pristine views offered by the more elevated holes, but the conditions were terrible. We've had plenty of rain and shine this summer but every fairway was half-brown, traps with hard and muddy, and several greens had dead patches. Not worth the $46 paid.
Mountain and valley challenge
Built on a mountain side and the drainage into the river, this course requires all the skills a golfer has. Errors are paid in golf balls lost. Bring two dozen balls just to be safe. The greens are in fine condition. Not for the faint of heart.
A must course to experience.
Oh dear, what happened?
I think the course suffered a flood, drought or both There we're areas that were absolutely ruined, most fairways were just shot and look to be years away from being playable. I golfed here earlier in the year and the course conditions were pristine. The green were in good condition (as always) besides a few ball marks that went unrepaired from the groups earlier in the day. I feel bad because something obviously went wrong their, and it couldn't have happened to nicer owners/staff/management.
Nice course, friendly people
Played here for the first time this year. Unfortunately recent flooding had caused issues with some of the fairways. However, I'm sure they will recover. Past rounds have been in good condtions. Many interesting holes and some spectacular views from the holes that go up the mountain.
Great views and layout but the fairways are in poor condition
Would play again the layout is great. The green are challenging and in good shape. The fairways were in poor shape badly burnt in many large areas. Friendly staff
A mountain course close to Hartford...
Played this course 25 years ago when a private club. The condition has suffered but the private club character still exists and the views are second to none. Definitely worth a visit.
Decent course, first time through is a challenge due to blind shots and tight landing areas.
Played this course for the first time (and probably last time) yesterday. Challanging course with several blind shots and tight landing areas. Greens are in very good condition. Several holes were cart path only which is ok, but the problem is the cart path is a disaster. Lots of trouble if you don'e keep it in play. Glad I played it (after a few recommendations) but probably won't go again. If you havent played it and want a challenge, give it a go.
A good collection of challenging holes with water, doglegs, and blind drives to keep your attention. This course is not for walkers!
Played a surprisingly fast round of 3.5 hours on a Saturday morning. Likely, many were reluctant to play in such stifling heat. This is a billy-goat course which was carved out of the side of Talcott Mtn. It offers varied terrain and some spectacular views of the Farmington River Valley. It is well-maintained, but suffers from poor drainage - not only on the holes that are adjacent to the river, but also in the various depressions on the mountainside. The Front is more difficult, if only due to the lack of any Par 5s. It requires extremely accurate drives on Nos. 4, 5, 7, and 8. The Back is more forgiving. I am still bedeviled by No. 15. Even when I strike a seemingly ideal drive on this dogleg right, I am left with a downhill lie to the contoured green below. As usual, I chunked my approach into the sand that guards the putting surface.
Anyway, a good score on this course is quite satisfying, as there is trouble to be had (and avoided) on just about every hole.
Second time here
Played after the torrential rains and three holes were closed, others shortened. It was wet but in good condition where it was playable. There are some blind shots and playing here before helped.
Great course, great view, 1 hiccup.
5 stars all around, except... Only problem was that when we made the turn, there were 3 4somes in front of us. Not sure where they came from, played the front in 80 minutes. Back 9 in 2 and half hours. Made a great day into an ok day, had to wait on all the shots on the back nine.
Hilly with sloping fairways and greens. The views are spectacular.
If you want a real challenge, hitting shots to elevated plateau greens from side or downhill lies then this is the place. The rough is unforgiving and I defy anyone to hit it very far from the deep stuff.
Great views - well maintained course.
For somewhat erratic longer ball player (my game) this course has many challenges! Fortunately I had a club member paired with me so my first visit to the course wasn't as traumatic as would have been without him! There are several blind tee-to-landing area shots which his advice clearly assisted me on. The course was in great shape and the greens were slick. Generally enjoyed the round save my scoring, but difinitely will return if deals are available.
Great shape !
Course is in great shape and its a great value. The greens are challenging .
well maintained/ great views
very well maintained coarse with amazing views. it is a very nice day out, and for the price I got from golfnow i would go again and again! already booked another tee time next week!
Beautiful Greens
We thoroughly enjoyed our play at Tower Ridge. The other Golfnow players we played with were good players and friendly. As a foursome we were able to keep well ahead of the twosome behind us. The greens there were some of the fastest and best maintained I've played in a while.
It's a picturesque course located right beneath Avon Mountain and about 2/3's of the course is very hilly. It would be very hard to walk this course. My son and I shot 82, 83 which is about our average score. The speed of the greens tricked me into four putting two of the greens. Later in the day they got pretty fast. But that's my fault not the greens.
I say give it a try. I think you will like it. The one slight negative was the sand in the traps. They are well maintained traps and perfectly raked but the sand is a darker, heavier type of sand. I liked it and had no problem but one of the others in our group was having a problem with it. It's not as pretty as some of that white, beach type of sand but in terms of playability I think it's fine.
Favorite golfcourse
I have played a lot of golfcourses over the past couple of years and Tower Ridge is the one course I always return to. The course is beautiful! Not only are the fairways, roughs, and greens well maintained, the views are incredible. I would not recommend walking this course because of steep elevation changes.
This is one of the hardest courses I have played with several blind drives and narrow holes.
