It Depends
Very nice course conditions. Interesting and challenging layout. Not a great course for beginners. Enjoyment will depend alot on who's in front of you and their pace of play. I've played 18 in 3 1/2 hours. I've also quit early after playing behind a group that took 2 hours and 40 minutes to play the front nine. Probably could use someone helping to push the slow pokes.
Bring your A game or stay home
What a stunning course from tee to green. Not for beginners. If you’re hesitant on what tees to play, play up. Absolutely fantastic condition when we played. I literally couldn’t imagine better. Some of the reviews on here are bordering absurdity. Show me a better maintained course within 50 miles of here that isn’t private and I’ll show you a liar. 5/5.
Beautiful Scenes, Challenging Course
Hate the player, not the game*. That’s how I’d describe my experience at this Virginia golf course just off I-95. Elevation changes, small undulated greens, beautiful scenery, and a challenging course. That’s all I got…

Okay -I have read the many reviews about the course. So, let me share my opinion. First, in full disclosure, I live in Potomac Shores and the Pro Shop is 3 minutes from my garage. I have played the course 5 time this year in rain, wind, and warm weather. I have also played or been on at least 50 courses from Bethpage -Blue course to the Palms course at the Orlando Disney property in the past year. Jack Nicholas' Signature Potomac Shores GC is outstanding and on par or better than many of the courses I have seen or played on the east coast. Now, I would say that it is long and challenging (200 feet of elevation change - 7020 from tips). However, this is NOT a beginner's course. Also, first time golfers on the course will be challenged by the wind and some blind shots. But range books are available in the Pro Shop, and I would highly recommend. It is one of the most scenic and beautiful courses you will play and since it was built through the woods close to the Potomac River there are colors and vistas that can be nicely distracting. Bring your "A" game and enjoy this awesome course.
Great course and staff
Great people here, great course, is in awesome shape.
The ride from green to tee's is long which sorta makes it a over 4 hour round...but really worth the experience.
Great course great staff
Only thing that keeps this from being 5 star is its a more then 4 hour round …any holes are 1/4-1/2 mile in between green to tee. Don’t get me wrong it’s nice cool ride through shady trees but I just played a 4.5 hour round and wasn’t waiting and no one was waiting on us.
Staff is super nice. Beverage cart is well stocked.
Course is in nice shape. Not as much break as you may think on fairly nice quick greens.
The course was disappointing
We have always found this to be an elite course but not the day we played. The greens were about the worse I've played this year. They weren't cut and were crazy slow (very disappointing). They had received some rain two days earlier but everything was very dry yet we were not allowed to go off the cart path which made for a longer round. They had a small shotgun start in the morning but had no golfers go through for half an hour yet would not let us tee off the front. This has been traditionally one of our favorite courses but we may not go back. VERY SAD!
Still early season.
Course looks beautiful. Greens were punched/aerated 5-6 weeks ago. Still need to be dress with sand at least one more to even out the holes. Kind of disappointed the greens aren’t cut for at least 4/5 days and bumpy. Probably will play again sometime in June and hopefully the greens should be grown in and rolling true. Tee boxes and fairways are nice. Fringe around some greens will need another month to grow. Good track though.
Overrated and unfair design
Beware, this course is extremely challenging, even from the 5,790 tees. The holes look like they were designed by Picasso. There are deep bunkers; steep hills and ravines; heavy woods immediately off fairways; trees and bunkers in the middle of fairways; and small, elevated greens. Do not go near this course unless you are at least a 10 handicapper. It's unplayable, unfair and unenjoyable for the average golfer. I've played it twice and won't go back. Moreover, the conditions were not worth $70 weekday. Lots of bare spots and dirt patches around the greens. Other area public courses ar in much better shape at this point. Finally, the starter, while friendly and helpful, went on an unprovoked rant about how he thinks the Covid epidemic was overblown. Very inappropriate.
Very Disappointed .. Jack Nicklaus needs to make another trip out to Woodbridge, VA.
I like Jack Nicklaus designed courses and I would go anywhere to play it .. but over here in Woodbridge, VA
Potomac Shores is a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. For the past 2 years. the Entire course was a Cart Path Only because from what I was told by the people who works at the course have told me that they have redone the fairways, bunkers, roughs, etc.., my goodness, I played there with my buddy and the course looked better before the ‘supposedly a renovation’ .. I thought the whole ideal of going c.p.o (cart path only) for the past 2 years was to bring back the course in a top notch shape, but from our recent experience, we really can’t see this golf course getting any better than what it is now .. it’s a shame because I have recently played at a course such as Whiskey Creek, Laurel Hill and Stonewall, to name a few, and those courses conditions were far lot better than Potomac Shores. This is a such a nice layout course, but I can’t see myself going back there and play at a cost of $60 ~ $90 range. Absolutely Not.
I’ll pass next time.
Poor conditions, greens had just been sanded and aired but that wasn’t the problem.
The whole course was just a lot of weeds. Way too expensive for the conditions. Definitely paying for the name.
Early season golf
Course was in good shape for this early in the season. Greens were very firm. Great layout.
Very Nice
The course is very nice and very very challenging. For such a nice course, it lack yardage markers!! Playing cart path only and carrying multiple clubs and not knowing what to hit was irritating.
Strange in many ways
First, the course has a good layout and potential. But the day was strange from the beginning: no signs on where the pro shop is, etc. The grill was by reservation only, so no place to eat. And even the signage on the course was odd: no markers on the holes with yardages and small signs telling you where the practice and first hole are located. Even the score card and yardage book were from before the course was reordered! Fee was $60 for a round, so you’d expect a little more from the facility. Starter was nice and directed us, but the course needs an overhaul in management and pro shop staff.
