Good for practice round and for beginners
Corse is now prerenovation, so fairway is not green and a lt of divots. They cut 2 holes to make 2 per3 and 2 per4. Those short per4 are just a distance around 250. I played from blue tee, but still short, little bit boring. Make sure if u wanna play in the afternoon , always so much winds. I like it, because when wind is behind me, I can get a extra distance!!! Anyway after finish a round, PGA super store is just 5min drive away from here, everybody can get new club if score would be badddd.
Course Overview
Tees, fairways and greens are in good condition. However due to the renovation, the course layout is a bit confusing... Lots of renegade golfers that seem to be jumping holes...
Ok round
Rate matches the course pretty close, it's nothing fancy, plays very slow, no Marshall on duty to speed up slow groups, no cart service on the course, and lacking restrooms out on the course. It's seems like it's been a couple years since its been under renovation and don't see much progress. In a pinch, it's close to home and cheap but don't expect speedy round.
Palo Alto GC/Waiting for the Re-Design
The best feature of the current Palo Alto GC is that a tee time can be had at virtually any day or time. But with that said, the pluses for the course are many. The overall course conditions are fair to good, the greens are in my opinion in very good shape. Some holes from tee to green are in pretty good condition, others are not so much. The track is basically flat, with very little slope, so it's a good place for the beginner to learn the game. The staff is courteous. Nice practice areas for putting/chipping/full shots. It's a great value compared to it's neighbors Shoreline and Sunnyvale GC at $39.00 to walk the course. My sense is that once the course is redesigned, it will certainly become a better track, but will cease to be a good option/value to cover the costs of the upgrade with increased green fees and more difficulty to get a tee time. Enjoy the current Palo Alto GC while you can before the closure and re-design.
Course is in transition
The course lost 3 holes on the back 9 to park expansion next door. To accomodate the loss they turned 9, perviously a par 5, into a 3 and a 4. Did the same on the back. Bad enough but when I played they had just aerated the greens. Fair enough at $25 but I wouldn't pay more.
WAs that a hole?
Staff made us feel like we were at a resort course - amazing support at checkin. Great rentals, and did everything they could to make us feel special. I remember this course from the 90's - but it is playing a little short as they re-design the neighborhood.
One holed just didn't seem like a hole. It had two different approaches, one from 6 o;clock for the men and one from 9'oclock for the women. No fairway. Couldn't see the hole -- just shoot over that berm there. Really is a 17 hole course right now .
Review
Overall great except the course has some construction issues. Mud, marsh, etc.
First time playing course.
They are working to redo the course. Condition is poor. Top many par 3's until course is finished.
Course construction changes in progress
signed up for 18. Pouring rain, so played 9. Course changes not updated for gps devices. Many repair areas.
Would play again with better weather.
Don't play until they finish construction
Played because I found a great price and rain was scheduled so I knew the course would be pretty empty and I would sneak in a quick round. Course is in poor condition, they are doing a major remodel so wait till it is finished before playing. The set up does not make any sense. Have not played this course quite a few years and should have skipped this round so preserve good memories.
Under Construction
Course was soon to be under construction & we were NOT told anything when we checked in so we found out the hard way that our Navigation Tech. was useless since many of the holes were changed around. What was there of the course was in pretty bad shape although fairways were decent & greens were decent as well. There was NO margin for error.
Pre Renovation Paly
The course appears to be on its own before a renovation will occur in 2015. The course is fairly short and the fairways are in mediocre condition. There are some chopped up holes at 250 yards in length with temporary greens. The holes with original greens still create a nice challenge for most golfers and the day I played there was no one ahead of me and I finished in under 3 hours. The views of the east bay hills and the wildlife are pleasing to the eye.
Course Conditions Need to Improve
Played this course after 5 or 6 years and it has been undergoing repair works, or better seems to be in the middle of it. Therefore conditions for play were poor with a few exceptions. This is a pity since it is generally speaking a nice course.
The other thing I found a bit unbalanced was that for the rental of the clubs it was 25 $, when the greenfee was only 19 $ incl. a cart. And yet I had to sign full responsibility for any damage caused...
Still enjoyed the game as such on a nice and sunny day. Food and drink at the restaurant after the game was good.
Fast play
Nice reasonable priced course
.played 18 holes in 3 hours 15 minutes.
The reduced yardage still requires some skill
This was the first time that I had played this course since they closed part of the course due to construction. It now plays as a Par 67. Due to the construction original holes 11, 12, 17 & 18 are gone although you still play the 12th and 18th greens as Par 3s. To compensate they split the original holes 9 and 16 into a short Par 4s and a Par 3. While both par 4s are drivable (252 and 251 yards) the greens are very small so hitting them with the tee shot requires considerable skill. The rest of the holes are unchanged. Given the parameters I think the course did an excellent job with the temporary redesign. The greens were in excellent condition and the fairways decent. The major downfall is that the rough areas are bone dry and have lost a lot of grass but that is plaguing every course in the area right now. I got a screaming deal on Golf Now for the price and would not hesitate to go back in the deal presented itself again.
Too many temporary holes.
Some holes are in a dangerous positions. For example: there a tee box behind a par 3. It's too close to tee off. 7 par 3's. This course is not a full course. To pricy for the condition.
Renovation in progress
The course in going through a renovation at this point in time so the course isn't in the best shape. I'm sure when the renovation is done this will be a great course but unless you get a great deal, I would recommend playing elsewhere.
Under Renovation; Revamped Layout
The course is "currently under renovation" now for over a year. They've completely removed two complete holes - a par 3 and a par 5 and split or shortened 3 other holes to make up for it. In general, they've ruined the course.
I'm actually wondering if they're ever going finish the "renovations". I think they're going to sell part of the course for real estate development...at least that's what it looks like they're doing...they don't look like they're building new golf holes.
Also, during the "renovations", they've let the course go...the upkeep is below par (pun intended) and the geese problem is worse than ever.
In general, I won't play there again even though the rates were good ($20 to walk) and the course was empty (Tuesday afternoon @ 3:20PM) and the weather was good. Still would rather play a complete course that's a good test of my game.
Course does not play the same with temp holes
It's a little confusing try to find the holes in the pre-renovation. A few of the holes are removed and re-directed to new ones with shorter distance. The green are very slow..
Under renovation but still a challenge.
I played from the white tees which were perfect for me as I average 200 - 215 on my drives. Only caveat is watch your step as Canada geese love landing and leaving their deposits everywhere. It's a municipal course so don't expect much in the way of interesting holes - it's hit it where you expect the target is and you won't be surprised. For $23 bucks, I have no complaints.
