Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money, The fairways have no grass on them and greens are covered in dead crab grass. With a little love it'd be a fun layout to play on.
Never playing here again
Has to be the worst golf course in New England if not all of the US. Little to no grass on the fairways and the greens were even worse. Place needs to be shut down.
You pay for what you get
I booked a round for $8.99 with a coupon, and it was certainly only worth that price. This course has taken a beating from the heat, luckily the greens are green. The greens play horrifically slow so if you're used to fast greens show up early to practice putting. Overall for what I paid I was happy with the result.
Use your backyard
I can guarantee everyone reading this has a yard that is in as good of (if not better) conditions than Leo J. I honestly think they haven’t ever tried to water the grass or do anything to improve the conditions. Most fairways only have 25% grass so just get used to hitting off of dirt. The fairways are terrible but the greens is the worst part. They are going to be the slowest greens you’ve ever played, my friends and I play there a good amount over the years (the price is great) and we usually don’t even bother putting. Your speed will be totally off if you get used to these greens then play a normal course. I will say that this course is fairly priced (unlike newton comm which costs an arm and a leg for an awful course) and the layout is great. If they could improve the conditions it would be a great course. If you just want to get a quick tee time after work and screw around with your friends and have a good time for cheap, this is the place….. 30x better than newton comm
Leo J
I am a fan of the layout of this course. Hard to walk given the distance between some of the holes, but you have to use your full bag. 570, 540 yard 5's....250,190 par 3's.... a decent amount of dog legs, so you have to strategize.... If they put in a legitimate sprinkler system to keep the grass up, it could be a great course.
Go home
This course is just a disgrace and the worst part is that the state runs it
Keeps Getting Worse
If you like greens that have more hazards than a putt putt course, Leo J is for you. If you like fairways made up of rocks, weeds and sand, Leo J is for you. The course is close to home for me so good to just get out there but don’t count of really improving much on the course conditions.
Can you rate a course below 1 star?
This poorly run state golf course should fire the Greens Keeper. Greens are bumpy and not cut for an entire weekend. Two new greens put in the course are in terrible condition. The greens keeper also had all the distance markers and granite stone tee markers removed. My golf partners walked off the course before nine holes when we hit the parking lot and said they would never come back. I played the 18 holes and it only got worse. Fairways are like cow pastures, Tees are uneven with no divot mix to repair tees. Some members said this is the best condition it will be in all year and to wait a month when the weeds and crabgrass take over the greens and course. I asked where I could buy some lunch and was told the state closed the snack bar before Covid and did not reopen. This is easily the worse condition for a golf course in New England. The only positive is it is in a good location with an affordable price. .
Save your money and use it towards a nicer golf course,..... which would be any other course. They should give refunds!
1st & last time
Horrible conditions. Greens were a mess. Fairways a mess. Rough a mess. Water only at clubhouse. Won’t be back until state commits to at least minimum standard for quality.
It’s bad but at least you got out.
Decent price and accessibility but in really poor shape. The rough is extremely rough and the fairways are rough. The greens are slow and bumpy. If you are using the course to practice you’ll be fine assuming you don’t care about actually making putts.
Great D. Ross layout ruined by DCR but not as bad as Ponkapoag
The people working here for any length of time are tired and fairly apathetic about how terrible the course conditions are here at the East Coast's greatest Dog Track. What you can expect are low, broadleaf and gnarly weeds that formulate about 96% of the fairways and tee boxes, and what grass is there is what we call "old grass". This course needs to be ripped up and reseeded, but that will never happen. In short, the history of the course explains how it will never flourish, and that is because DCR hires people that embezzle tens of thousands of dollars intended for course improvements, then does nothing to rectify the situation still many years later. This place makes me want to cry when I play it, because 100% of golfers agree that the layout is super fun and still shows some of the natural contours Donald Ross helped find and shape into the course. Expect nothing but a 70's shag carpet on the greens where the grass is actually growing. This place might have a shot if it weren't run by such half-wits that do things like use a chemical on all the greens at once improperly that burnt them all to a crisp a couple years ago. Please, someone in MA government save these public courses: we have scant little and few overpriced, crappy courses to choose from in MA for public golf, where there are more private courses than any other concentration in the US. This is just a shining example of what could be great if one of the donkeys in charge would just give a darn instead of bragging about the private courses they play instead of those under their care. Enjoy your round!!!
Great golf course
I love playing here, the staff is very friendly, the course is fun and challenging, the layout is great. The only thing is the greens need a lot of work, I know it's the end of the season but the green don't look much different from the summer. Overall I'd 100% recommend playing here
Should be free
The dogwalkers don’t pay, why should the golfers? Tee to green the worst course conditions ever. Terrible layout too if its your first round there. But its like pizza, even a lousy course is still golf.
Golf Course?
The staff were friendly which was appreciated. The course was completely dead—from tee boxes to greens grass was a premium. There was not a single true green to be found. All the greens were a combination of dead, punched, crab grass, and dirt. The “cafe” was closed & there was no water on the course.
Maybe earlier in the season it’s better. Can’t complain for $45 but it was truly bad so do with that what you wish.
