Great layout bad shape
This is the second oldest public golf course in the country. It’s a great lay out short on the card, but don’t let the lack of length for you. Fairways are generally very very narrow with landing areas on average about 30 yards across. The course is hilly. The greens are small and sloping. You have to know how to play this course, accuracy and a confident short game are the keys to success.
But for all its charm and history, the course cannot overcome patchy inconsistent greens, riddled with ball marks, gouges and bald patches. Then, there’s the pace of play. Glacial. A public course in the middle of Newark gets a huge amount of traffic, which I imagine makes it very difficult for the staff to keep up..

Great Muny, fantastic folks
Yes the course was a little beat up. It’s October. But I can see the late season improvements that they’re trying to make and I really want to see this place next year in late June or early July. The layout is so good and I love that it’s adjacent to a park that it’s enjoyed by the community. Even the loud music coming from the parking lot was enjoyable.
We were teamed with a couple of locals that know the course and they helped us navigate the blind tee shots. This duo were also a lot of fun.
Staff was great and had a nice sense of humor after a stressful frost delay.
I like this place. I’ll be back if I can score a tee time.

Abnormally poor condition
Weequaihic has always been in good shape, and quite a gem right in the shadow of Newark Airport. But for some reason this time out the course conditions had a taste of the bad old days of Essex Country Municipal courses. Perhaps the country has spent so much time, effort and money upgrading Hendricks Field and working now on Frances Byrne that Weequaihic is being overloooked. I hear it will eventually get attention after the Byrne renovation is complete. I hope so because it is a fun track with some holes that are real tests.

Surprise
We booked thru teeoff, never even knew this place existed. Played half the round in drizzle. Starter was very friendly and informative about the course, and even came out to check on us early. It's not terribly long (we play from the white tees), good for our group between age 63 and 72. The greens rolled well and are very consistent, although a few had some dry rot areas. Tight fairways, mostly good tee boxes. Some tees and greens are tightly bunched, probably hear a lot of "fore" when busy! We liked it, and will be back.
