Disappointed
Greens were in really bad shape & not much at all in the way of amenities.
Great day on the red fox
Have played both red and grey now and it's hard to choose which I like better.
I like the red because it's so wide open hard to lose any balls. The grey is great seemed more out in the wilderness . I'll be back . Mabey for 36
Great Course
Recently punched greens made putting somewhat untrue. Other than that that course was in beautiful shape.
home sweet home
I've played this resort course for 40 years, starting in the late seventies. The layout has gone from 27 holes to its present 36. It has changed in so far as many of the beautiful pine trees that border its fairways and condos have been lost to storms or old age. A shame! However the courses, both the Red (original) and the Grey( new nine) have only become more mature and as always, very playable and yet challenging. Most fairways are fairly wide, the approaches to greens slightly elevated ,and the flat surfaces well contoured and fairly fast and true. It has seen many ownership changes over the years, and has struggled to survive, but it is still a course well worth the short drive from Pinehurst. The value is outstanding. I am Canadian.
Layout decent.
Little money being spent on this course for maintenance and upkeep.
Grey Fox at FoxFire
Played on a Golfnow hotdeal so got a great price. Nice design but needs some serious work. Greens almost totally lost and bunkers a mix of dirt, sand and rocks.
Fairways good and tee boxes not bad. Looks like bent grass greens still and they've really taken a beating with the heat and rain. Don't understand why, after all this time, they haven't switched to Bermuda. I would have a hard time coming back if I had to pay full price. Unfortunate because I do like the course itself, just tough conditions right now.
Course was in decent shape
I had a tough day on the course, so that may have affected this review a little. The fairways were in pretty good shape, but the greens were kinda rough in spots. We had a good bit of rain that week and there was a lot of standing water in the fairways. I'll probably play this course again sometime in the future, just hope conditions are better.
Rain really hurt this coura
Exceptionally heavy rains really hurt the course the day before. Sand traps were washed out. Greens were not in good shape.
Well Managed
Showed up 5 minutes late due to construction on highway and pro shop guy said if I went out behind the 2 threesomes I'd be miserable. He drew me a map to find the 9th hole and sent me off that way. Never saw anyone til 18. Course was in good shape, but greens were a bit off in looks. Lots of brown areas, but I never had issue as they must have been rolled to accommodate. All my putting was true and the speeds were consistent. There were no real blind tee shots so that was good.
Poor shape
Course was in very poor condition and a big disappointment. Very different than when I played this course in the past. Will not be playing here again unless some major improvements occur.
Pretty but average
Pretty as are most NC courses but also pretty avera ge in terms of golf experience. A little rough around the edges maintenance wise. Greens not as good as expected with fungus and bare spots. Would have been okay at about half the price.
Weather beaten
After reading many good reviews I decided to take the 2pm golf slot in scorching weather through the golfnow.com site (unbeatable prices). I have to say it was barely worth the price because the bunkers were mostly unplayable, greens were barren and burned out. There were no drinking stations on the course until the eleventh, fifteenth, seventeenth holes. And since the clubhouse is NOT at the turn we were at heatstroke stage at 4pm in August! I would definitely think twice before coming back any time soon.
Great Course
Was in the area for work and had 3 days to golf. Played the Red course the day before and really enjoyed it. The Grey course did not disappoint. We booked a hot deal around 2pm and arrived very early to hit a bucket. We were able to get out almost a hour ahead of our tee time since it was about 100 degrees and it was not crowded. Staff was extremely friendly! Being a fairly new golfer I really enjoyed the course. Got my first birdie ever on the 12th hole which made me enjoy the round even more. Truly recommend both the Red and Grey courses for great value and a great staff.
Older course with challenging layout
This is an old course not many amenities. We played the Grey course as Red course was closed. I really liked the hole layouts. The greens were OK my main complaint is bunkers. It's not sand more like crushed rock/gravel, very coarse. So it tends to be well compacted. One of my playing partners just decided to putt his ball out of bunkers. It was hot, there was no cart attendant on course and there is no return to clubhouse after 9 holes, so stock up before you tee off. I like the course but wouldn't pay more than $25.
Nothing special here
I had a free day and the plan was to head to pinehurst area for 36 holes. I figured I'd play both course at foxfire. I played the red course first, and based on the condition of the course, I decided to leave and play somewhere new. The grass wasn't cut very low. The tee boxes required 3/4 of tee to make it above grass level. Fairways as well seemed almost fringe level. Bumpy greens made making a putt very difficult. The pace of play was never going to be great, considering I played as a single. I teed off on time with a senior husband and wife on green. They were obviously members, and every green was practice time for them, would see them drop four balls for putting. A ranger was never seen. The practice range is a marsh hay field. Once was enough.
