Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon is a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best public golf courses in Ohio. Since opening in 1926, the course has undergone several improvements over the years that have built upon its longstanding reputation. It became more challenging while maintaining its classic design. The layout features numerous strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards on several holes. The greens and fairways are also kept in immaculate condition. The final trio of holes is the most challenging on the course. The 16th is a long par 4 with a sloped fairway, and there is a lake on the left side of the fairway on the 17th. Hawthorne Valley Golf Club's finishing hole is a tricky par 4 that doglegs left and plays uphill.

Reviews
great course and layout
First time playing this course and what a great course. If want a course the will challange you to hit fairways and keep the ball in play then this is the course. This course has some amazing holes and par 3's are the best in the area. I will be a repeat customer
Nice Track
Had a great day on a challenging course. I wish I played better but perhaps the thick rough and tough design had something to do with that. The course was in great shape and has a real nice layout. Very well maintained bunkers and fairways. The greens had a few more than normal ball marks that needed to be fixed and I thought the ball rolled a little slower for this time of year. Also I felt there are some trees that need to be addressed ( dead tree on 8 and a few on the back that need to be removed or at least trimmed). Overall a great Track and recommend it highly to the above average golfer or anyone that enjoys a challenge.
Dougin Solon
I will do it again. It was a very positive experience.
Very Nice, Must Play Again
This is a great course, with a lot of blind shots (especially for a first timer). That being said, I throughly enjoyed my round. especially since it only took me a little less than 3 1/2 hours. Course was in great condition. Starter was know where to be found, and guys in pro shop didn't seem to concerned about it, so I just proceeded to the course without talking to the starter. $5 for a hotdog is a little outrageous. Will definitely play again
good place
the only thing I did not like about the layout was the blind shots.
Nicely painted greens
Greens were slow and grass was thin. Fairways were average. I used my driver once otherwise nothing but fairway wood off the tees which makes it even longer. 1st time here and won't be back. $50 is steep for what you get.
Great Track
First time here. Definitely will be back. Need to play it a couple times to get a feel for it. A lot of great holes though makes you think, definitely old school country club layout.
Must play challenging course.
This is a course you need to play a couple of times to get to know the lay-out. Blind tee shots, lay ups, etc, hinder first time players. Need to work the ball both ways to give yourself good second shots. Will humble the big hitter/ wedge player. Need to use alot of other clubs in your bag. Small greens. Manicured fairways & thick rough. A shot makers course. Not a course for beginners. I love this course. Staff was friendly but needed more help at the turn if you just wanted to get something to drink. No cart girls but had water & snacks at both front & back nines. Will go back again !!!!!
excellent
Course was in great shape rough was long and snarl making it difficult to score unless you were in the middle. Greens nice and fast
This course always has good features
Glad to see they put in white tees for us older people. Greens were very nice, rolled true but slow.
Great Course
A lot of fun and challenging from the tips. Really picturesque layout.
Over priced 5 Club Course
Two things brought me to play this course for the first time… 1) it is a Donald Ross design… who doesn't want to play the classics :-) 2) their website said they were ranked #2 public course and based on the #1 of Windmill in Ravenna, OH, I thought it would be comparable… I was wrong! Windmill's course blows Hawthorne out of the water… because at Windmill I will use the full compliment of my bag where at Hawthorne I only used my driver once. 3 Wood and long irons off the tee and wedges in were the call of the day at Hawthorne… I have never used my 60 degree so often… Maybe I am being unfair, but I did play all the way back, plus the hard degree doglegs felt really silly… I will say all their par 3's were awesome! But par 3's do not make a course… Finally at $50 bucks a pop I would rather spend my money at a course that challenges my full skills rather than just my wedges… Sorry Donald and Hawthorne, but your golf course is over priced and a bit silly in the layout :/
Hawthorne
Very satisfied the course is in excellent shape and the employes are very friendly.
Great Track
Hawthorne Valley is an extremely good course with a old school private feel. You have to hit fairways and stay below the hole but it is a fun place to play! It takes a little course knowledge but it would be a great place to play everyday!
Traditional course. Challenging but fair
Great course layout. In good condition for this time of year. Would definetely come back.
hawthorne valley course
I enjoy playing this course. Great value. I would recommend this course to all my friends.
hands down the best course around
Nicest course in greater cleveland. If i could play golf here every for the rest of my life, i would.
One of the hardest courses in Cleveland
This course is no joke. Many difficult holes with forced carries. I would not recommend a high handicapper play here. Considering the normal price, Im sure that will scare away most everyone anyway. That being said it is well taken care of and I enjoyed a peaceful round as a single. The staff was cordial which compared to the last time I played here, was a GIANT step forward.
super placement
If you are going to play here you better like doglegs. The fastest greens I have putted on all year, but they held and rolled true. Also on the small side, but it works for a course barely 6000 yards. This course is all about placement and if you hit the driver more than 200 leave it in the bag. There are maybe 4 holes where there is a benefit to hitting it. Donald Ross design is beautiful and challenging but need to be a good ball striker with the irons. I could play here once a year b/c of condition and value but not all the time. i understand why the course went public.
Indeed! a Challenging track, you have to strategize from the tee. Course is not long, for more advance player 3 wood or even 3 iron will work on most holes. Some of the areas adjacent the fairways need some TLC, some of the trees are over-grown. Trimming some of the trees and cleaning these areas would improve pace of play. Course is already a challenge w/o these items.
