Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon is a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best public golf courses in Ohio. Since opening in 1926, the course has undergone several improvements over the years that have built upon its longstanding reputation. It became more challenging while maintaining its classic design. The layout features numerous strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards on several holes. The greens and fairways are also kept in immaculate condition. The final trio of holes is the most challenging on the course. The 16th is a long par 4 with a sloped fairway, and there is a lake on the left side of the fairway on the 17th. Hawthorne Valley Golf Club's finishing hole is a tricky par 4 that doglegs left and plays uphill.

What a beautiful golf course. Hate to see a track this wonderful lose its membership core and be forced to take public play
The fairways were tight and perfect, tees were nice but it was evident that play is now public. Greens rolled true, w a lot of character and break.
Guys if you play this course please fix your ballmarks, replace your divots, fill your tee iron shots. Its truly a treat to play HVCC, really top notch layout
The only knock for me was the clubhouse. Although the entire clubhouse didn't seem functional, the small part that was needs to be updated. Its very unsightly from the exterior as well. Just doesn't fit the incredible course it sits on. Old pool grounds need to be leveled as well
A must play in cleveland, must.
Requires good shotmaking to score well vs. brute strength.
Love the course. Not terribly long - even from the tips, but requires shot placement skills, putting skills, and excellent course management to score. Course is always maintained in very nice condition. The only drawback to this club is the staff. Don't expect to be treated like a valued customer if you choose to play here. The clubhouse staff, and especially the starter couldn't care less if you play here or not. It's almost as if the staff is granting a favor by allowing play on this (public) course. If you can tolerate the arrogance, the course is exceptional.
Challenging but fair course....a couple of quirky holes.
Played the blue tees and the extra 300 seemed like a mile. Course was challenging but fair. Very helpful staff.06/16/2013
$20 -$25 per round would be more competable with other similar course in NE Ohio
The course was designed by Donald Ross and have been well maintained. The starter could be more friendly like those at some other courses nowadays. The fees are one the high side, $40-50 on weekdays and $60-65 on weekend. Golfnow can offer only $32, and rarely $25. Those discount t times are restricted to noon only. Not really appeal to senior golfers. Lower the fee and have some openning in the morning will help.
Very Nice
Better be on your game. Tight, Creeks, hard greens, crazy par 3's. First time playing was a learning experience. There is def a lot to learn. Looking forward to trying it again.
This course is in excellent condition and well worth experiencing no matter your skill level
First I have to say I was HIGHLY impressed by the pristine course conditions having never played here before. The greens were that of Country Club material and quite fast as well. Even from the tips it's not a super long course, but all the sloping lies in the fairways and greens makes up for that lack there of. Accuracy is definitely a key off the tee (especially from the tips) plus the small greens (Donald Ross design feature) adds to the difficulty. Though don't be scared off by this because there are various sets of tees for all skill levels and the silver tees (upper most tees) are a stones throw away from some greens making play much more enjoyable for the lesser skilled players. The scenic views were some of the best I've seen in a long time adding to the course's beauty. The back nine definitely had some tough holes so make sure to fuel up when making the turn. I was fortunate to get an early time so got to enjoy the complimentary continental breakfast spread. There were only a few items (bagels, cinnamon rolls with icing and chocolate chunks, orange juice, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, tomato juice, and fresh made regular & decaf coffee), but the quality of everything was outstanding. On the course they had complimentary pretzels and plenty of freshly made ice and water coolers which was quite a surprise and added treat. After the round they offer a lunch buffet for ONLY $10 with super high quality fare such as burgers, dogs, grilled onions & peppers, fresh French fries, salad bar, tons of different macaroni type dishes, plenty of fresh fruits, homemade brownies with walnuts & powdered sugar, and 3 types of homemade cookies just to name a few of the items offered. Actually there were people who just came to the course just for the Lunch Buffett which is definitely well worth it on its own. Though overall my experience @ Hawthorne Valley CC was right up there with some of the best I've ever had. I'd recommend you come out for the day and take in the whole experience b/c it's well worth every cent. i hope this review helps encourage anyone reading it who's on the fence to come check out Hawthorne Valley in the near future.
Course is tight with smaller greens that can be quick. A challenge to any level of golfer. Very nice lay-out.
Ist time using GolfNow......great course...and a GREAT way to save money. Highly recommend using it to schedule tee times for yourself or with friends.
Definitely a former Country Club
Course was nice. Greens were recently aerated. I really don't have any complaints.
Well manicured, tight course
Other than the greens recently aerated, the course was in great shape. Staff was friendly. Course is one of our favorites. Heck of a deal for the golf now pricing.
A very challenging course with a great layout.
A very challenging course with a great layout. A fun place to play.
Nice
Course in nice shape. Complimentary snacks, water and fruit on course were a nice touch!!!
Never boring,never the same!
The staff at H. V..C.C. was great especially the starter, the course played wet with the overnite rain. The greens were not cut or rolled that day but played fast. Would recommend this tract to anyone !
Hope to play it again and again.

Great first round of the season.
We were the first group off that day, never really had anyone come up behind us. Saw some interesting wild life. Looks like work was being done on the course to improve/ready the course for the season. Great bagel (complimentary).
HOt deal for $25 - can't beat it for Hawthorne Valley
It would have been nice that the threesome in front of us let our twosome play thru!
good course and great staff
The staff there treats you really great and the course is in great shape (especially for april).
Great conditions, I'm sure the beautiful landscape will be even more challenging and scenic once the trees and flowers fill in later this spring
Back 9 is more challenging but not torturous for mid-level golfers. Great elevation changes throughout the course. Fairways are ample, fortunately, because the rough can be deep and the well placed bunkers are frequently in play. Play smart and know the layout to avoid nasty surprises and you'll fall in love with this course!
Beautiful course!
For late October, the course was in very good shape. The fairways and the greens are still quick and clean.
My buddy lost a ball or two in the rough, because of the fallen leaves, but sometimes that happens when hitting into the rough. The rough also tended to be a bit more wet and muddy, but again, that wasn't a problem by keeping it in the fairway.
We were paired with a third guy, who really slowed us down, but at least it was a great day.
There were lots of deer and squirrels running around, so it was very relaxing. Makes you almost forgot how close you are to some fairly busy streets.
fall golf
beautiful course not long but makes you use all clubs in the bag scenery is beautiful especially in the fall fast greens great value using golfnow
Par 3s are outstanding
A, Donald Ross, gem in Solon, Ohio. The course is always in good to great shape. Course is made for shotmakers.. hook, fade, or straight. Fun to play and a deal at under $40. All in the group had good comments about the course and the condition it was in... Only problem was we were behind a very slow group. Other than that, it was a good time.
Fun course
Course was in pretty good shape considering the dry summer..... pro shop wasn't as friendly as some... bawked at a spectator.... we had a threesome... was willing to pay for the ride along, but still had an attitude about it.... nice course though.
