Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2019.
Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon is a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best public golf courses in Ohio. Since opening in 1926, the course has undergone several improvements over the years that have built upon its longstanding reputation. It became more challenging while maintaining its classic design. The layout features numerous strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards on several holes. The greens and fairways are also kept in immaculate condition. The final trio of holes is the most challenging on the course. The 16th is a long par 4 with a sloped fairway, and there is a lake on the left side of the fairway on the 17th. Hawthorne Valley Golf Club's finishing hole is a tricky par 4 that doglegs left and plays uphill.

Reviews
Not nearly as nice as prior years....
Fairways not as plush as last year and many of the bunkers without sand. Greens OK but too many ball marks.
Tried to get a beer after the 18 holes but staff said they were closed although they were still there. Not very customer friendly.
Challenging and fun!
Great course, great greens, and will test you! Definitely worth the price!
Bring your A game!!
Play this course in a weekly league and as much as I can otherwise,it never ceases to challenge your game. The holes force you to land in play for an attempt to get on in regulation, but getting to these greens is only half the battle, they are brutal!!Any area golfers looking for a challenge need to play this course.
Historic Ross course.
Very friendly staff, and beautiful, nicely maintained old course.
Very long Saturday
Golfnow should not schedule the first tee time after an outing.
There should have been staff on hand to move the outing along and not allow them to have a sit down lunch at the turn??
Made for a very long and frustrating round of golf. It was not worth the discount that Golfnow provided given the amount of time it took to play.
Donald Ross design
Love this Donald Ross design!!!! This course is great for the golfer like myself who likes riding carts and no walkers.. (SORRY)... The pace was consistent with no traffic jams or waiting. The course still maintains it "Country Club atmosphere" and the staff treats every one like a member. I WILL PLAY THIS COURSE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. Thanks Hawthorne
Super tight
I like a challenge. But, this was too tight. I can hook/pull a 5 wood just as far as I can hook/pull a driver; so keeping driver in bag was not a plan. There s just no bailout. Nowhere to put the ball but fairway. If not on fairway, you've got a few yards, then ball is gone. Greens were so small, you could simply flip a penny and be on the other side. Course was in good shape; but for the money, I'd rather play Sleepy Hollow or for 6$ more, Shale Creek.
great course will play again
very nice, well maintaind and a great test for any skill level
Lots of potential.
The biggest drawback of Hawthorne were the greens. Because Hawthorne is situated in the valley, several holes do not receive enough air flow to keep them dry. As a consequence, there are many greens that are quite "chewed up" from the subsequent moisture related diseases and spike marks. I did notice fans on many of the more stagnant greens, that were not running. That being said, there are many features of this course to love. Donald Ross gives you lots of contoured fairways that please the eye and trick your approximation of distance. There are also many bunkers, which are generally well maintained. I also get the "old school" feel with this course, both in terms of relative seclusion and the tiny greens. Even at non-discounted prices, with slightly substandard conditions, Hawthorne is still worth the money.
This course has good features
The staff could of made me feel a little more welcome.
Difficult but enjoyable
I would not recommend this course for novices, unfortunately I agreed to play with 2 of them and spent the day waiting for them and looking for lost balls.
The greens were slow, we played at 2 pm, I don't know if they were mowed that day.
excellent value, interesting layout
As a former country club, this track is sporty. Don't need your driver every par 4 or Par 5 - helps to have played the course before with many blind shots to small landing areas.
Greens had been aerated earlier in the week, so it was very hard to hold the lines. Great value, fun to play, greens slow and bumpy
pace of play ok , so it was a very nice round of golf
Absolutely beautiful golf course.
Everything you would want in a great country club. Pristine conditions and great diversity of holes, Loved the course 8
The course was in pretty rough shape.
The course was a little rough. Too many blind spots without enough description. Yardage markers were difficult to find on some holes. Lastly, the greens were beat up pretty badly compared to other courses around the area. For the price, I would definitely not play there again.
Former country club gone public
I was born and raised in Solon. So growing up I was always aware of this course but never had the chance to play because it was strictly private until recently. I played Once when it was private with a member. This course is still in the same conditions as when it was only a private course. Fees are pricey compared to other public courses but honestly you can find a better condition course in northeast Ohio.
Great course
This I sine of the nicer courses I have played this year. Very challenging, with the different elevations, and doglegs. For the price I would play this course again.
5 and 1/2 hours on a Friday afternoon
A beautiful afternoon and eventually evening of golf was made a test of patience by the lack of effective course rangers. Numerous groups complained about much slower than normal play. Finally they sent out a ranger(now we are on the 10th hole) and found the offending group.
The course gave us a voucher for a free 9 holes each but the dismissive attitudes displayed by the staff who refused to investigate the problem will stick in my mind.
Shotmakers Dream
Lots of doglegs and lots of visual intimidation. If you spray the big clubs all over, leave them in the bag..
Wow!
I went and played this course with my dad for the first time recently and we were hooked right away. Our golf pro recommended the course to us and we decided to give it a shot. The course is beautiful! Everything is kept under pristine condition. It is a challenging course but still worth the price of admission. We also had nobody behind us or in front of us trying to push us along or slow our rate of play down. This course is an excellent public course and I recommend it to everyone. The only thing I can say is that they should have range balls sitting out as opposed to having to go inside and buy a bucket.
Great Ross design with tiny greens
Exceptional value and they don't make courses like this anymore, staff is great and the course conditions are excellent , especially the bunkers and greens. If you can get it for $ 40 or under its a steal. Oh yeah if you can't work the ball a little both ways it is going to drive you nuts. That's the fun of it though !!
