Nice place!
I'd always heard of how great the Sky Course at Lost Canyons was, and it did not disappoint! The tough tee shots, fast and difficult greens, and impressive views and landscape made my day wonderful. The conditions were great, although it is obvious that the tee boxes for the black tees do not get much attention (I would not suggest playing from there. It was BRUTAL). My only concern was that some greens had ants on them, but really other than that, it was a fantastic day of golf. Another Pete Dye masterpiece.
Challenging Course For Amateurs
Not sure where all the negative reviews are coming from on this course? If you are used to private country clubs with 5 star amenities, then this place is not for you. But, a huge, challenging 18 hole course for those with less "needs", I couldn't ask for more. We played with no rush behind us, no one bothered us on the course with our own F&B. Staff was friendly with our brief interactions. We played a few extra holes (shhhhh). I can understand if you pay $70+ bucks a round you can be upset, but for around $30, you get more than you bargained for.
I guess that I'm not an uptight golfer type :)
This could be an awesome course!
A beautiful Friday afternoon and I booked a “hot deal” for just under $30 to play Lost Canyons Sky Course. I had played here once before and was impressed with the course so I was excited to play again.
SoCal is in the middle of what could be a record setting draught, so I understand that a golf course in Simi Valley is going to suffer. I thought the course considering the draught had good greens and the fairways were absolutely playable.
However, the staff must need to be watered because they are not full of life. From the moment we arrived the entire staff (with the exceptions of the grounds crew folks and the drink girl the one time we saw her, which was on the #1 green – another problem) was crabby and aloof. There was little to no care of our presence. We waited for over 8 minutes for anyone to show up so that we could purchase water before teeing off. Not to mention I was unable to fill my water bottle (I was forced to fill from the sink in the restroom, I’m not a snob but come on….)
This round was better than the first time but the staff here makes me not want to return. I can’t say that I plan on coming back. I would recommend the course if you get a great deal. Just bring your own food and drinks and don’t plan on a pleasant experience with the staff.
Kirk Bedinger gives 2 thumbs up
In town visiting a few friends in LA, and wanted to find a few couses on the out skirts to relax and enjoy a few rounds.
This is a championship golf course with wonderful views of wild life canyons and Just a great place to get away from the busy LA hustle. Course is in the middle of an owner change, so conditions could be better, but the greens were very true and smooth.
Needs some water, but for 45.00, this is a course that would cost you 150.00 in most cities. Very generous driving area, but like all Dye courses, the game begins with the second shot.
I could play this course everyday, and never get tired of the track!
Our group is all 4 Hcp or lower and found this course fun, exciting, and just a great test. Very fair course with the views of Jackson Hole!!!
Must see and play! Do not wait til they get back, and see green fees at150.00!
Will be back many times in the future!!! Thank you Golf Now!!!
Love it!!!!!!
Lost is gonna die soon
First time I played and was happy as shot about 13 over but the course is in Preety bad shape and will likely close in year or 2.
There are no ball washer on any hole, carts are old and run down. No beer women or facility for water on course.
Lost Canyons could be something...but it's not right now
I was looking forward to the scenery and desert experience. Being from Indiana I don't get opportunities like that often. I have played many Pete Dye courses since he's from my area and saw a lot of his signature designs here, especially the greens!!
The course does leave a lot to be desired, surprisingly the greens were in the best shape of anything. Irrigation runs throughout the canyon so there is no excuse for the fairways and tee boxes not to be full and lush.
The tee box areas need a lot of attention as far as cleaning them up and making a statement with stairs or paver brick to step up to elevated areas.
The fairways are very patchy and need some TLC to knock out the rye grass that is invading. Just sheer watering especially on hotter and dry days will surely keep many of the appearance issues at bay.
The clubhouse is huge and has a lot of potential but is empty and you would think you walked into the hotel in "The Shining". There is hardly any merchandise and an update to brighter more inviting color scheme would surely make an impact.
After speaking with a staff member after my round (played as a single in 2:30 since I was the only one on the course at the time), he informed me that there are plans in the works to turn the Sky course into a private country club. The Shadow course has been closed for several months and will be converted to more housing development. Tentative plans are to have all the planned changes complete by January. There is a lot of money being put behind these plans and apparently they surely do not want to close the course, but instead bring it back to its original intended luster (Lost Canyons never even started anywhere near what the pictures and website show).
I will surely return in the future and hope to see these changes put into full force. The course has a lot of potential and I would love to see it in all it's grandeur when it is properly cared for and given attention. It really can be quite the challenging track with some spectacular views.
-Disappointed from Indiana
Mediocre condition, fast play, good challenge
There were very few players on the course. I played as a single, played through a couple of groups, causing slight delays and finished in just over 3 hours. The fairways are inconsistent,, not bare spots but not smooth due to a lot of clumpiness. Many fairway traps were bare dirt. Greens are smooth and true, but a bit slower than they appear. The course is challenging due to the typical Pete Dye steep dropoffs around greens when you miss them on the wrong side. It's not near worth the rack rate but definitely worth it on the many specials offered due to the pace of play and the challenging layout.
Used to be better
I remember playing this course years ago and it was the toast of Simi Valley as far as golf courses were concerned. Now, though it is in better shape than 2013, there just seems to be a lack of care. Unmowed tee boxes on a few holes, poor signage to tell you where to go, and numerous fairways you are hitting off dirt. I wouldn't pay full price for this course. I had a $35 twilight "hot deal" which I'd say is fair value.
Also, I tried to buy golf balls before the round and the clubhouse had zero inventory! The man said they thought they were closing down in February for reconstruction... Well, it's May 31st, time to get inventory back. That's poor management.
one of the wonders in the world for under $25
Great course love it...Best deal in town$$$$...One of the seven wonders of the world..beautiful views
Great course
Used to live in Simi Valley a few years before this course was built. This is a wonderful track with many challenging holes.
Beautiful but tough.
Let me preface this by saying I'm a big fan of this layout and facility. Now, this course will eat you up. Especially on a dry, windy day. Good drives can run off fairways, putts become slippery. But it is a fun challenge, in a great place. The "Shadow" side is done, and there is a plan in place to make "Sky" a little more forgiving. I am excited to see what they do with it, it's probably my favorite place to play in surrounding LA.
Maintenance, upkeep???
WOW! It used to be that the Sky course was well kept and they only let the shadow course go to the dumps - not anymore - now both courses are in complete ruin! I cannot believe Fred Couples still allows them to associate his name with the property. The course has become a cow pasture and is by no means worth what they charge. Unbelievably bad, aside from mowing the greens I am not certain what they do in the way of maintenance. Tee boxes were overgrown, fairways overgrown, huge piles of sand in the bunkers. Blight and weed-infested fairways, dry hard greens - terrible! If you are looking for a nice course in the area go to Robinson Ranch or Moorpark - Lost Canyons has gone to the birds.
fun challenging greens
the condition of the course has greatly improved over the past three months. the green are in extremely good shape.
Course looks its best in 10 years!
They're returning the course to it's original beauty & challenge. Greens are in great shape, fairways are good, rough is thick, some nice modifications and very challenging from the tips!
Never again!
After several bad experiences, we decided to give Lost Canyons one last chance. Never again! The "Shadow" course is now closed for good, but the "Sky" remains open. The conditions are SLIGHTLY better, but still not worth the drive/time/money. The fairways were almost all dead/in horrible condtion. The tees appear to not have been mowed in weeks. The greens were in horrible shape. The pace of play was horrible, even during less than ideal weather on a Tuesday afternoon. We never saw a beverage cart and no one was in the bar/dining room when we stopped in prior to the round. They also got rid of the GPS on the cars. Even the pencils no longer have the name/logo on them - shows how much they are pinching pennies here. The two bright spots: the views and the guy in the pro shop let us tee off 20 minutes late, so we had time to warm up. Even for the $20 we payed on GolfNow, I wouldn't go back.
Vacation course
I chose this course for my vacation day/challenge course. The layout is awesome along the line of the mountains. I paid $60 which was a far reach from the original rack price of $125. Although it was a slash of 50%, it was still a $39 course for the scenery.
This summer it may be an awesome course. It looks as though the fairway and greens have been damaged before so the course is in the midst of repairs. Spotty in the fairway and slow on the greens. Pete Dye did not fail in designing the greens though. Very hard to read for even a low handicap player. I hope they continue to nurture this course it can truly be a $125 course again this summer. At that point I will recommend anyone that I can!
Should just close the course
Horrible to see the course like it was, they should just board it up and close! I would imagine Pete & Freddie are hanging their heads low. Very sad.
Going down hill fast.
This course back in 2000 had great potential Since then is has been steadily declining. The Shadow course is closed and the sky course will soon follow. When you get paper copies of the score card you know the end is near. Beverage service is non existent. I have heard that the plan is to build houses on the shadow course and later to make the Sky course private after a remodel. The greens are patchy and then there is the constant wind which is in your face no matter what hole your playing.
good overall
good greens, fairways are a little dry and could use some water. overall good for the price
