Very sad
A nice course gone bad
Quite simply they didn't even have ball washers on the carts or at the tees
The fairways were a mess
The staff whatever there was was completely inatrentive
Even the snack bar was closed
Still a goof course to play
This course is not the high quality it once was, still a great layout but course condition are poor, greens are average public quality. It's almost depressing if you look around facility because it's seems so empty. Food staff is usually just one person so allow extra time getting food or drinks. The only time I play this course is when Golf Now has a Hot Deal, but would never pay rack prices. Cart person only has a few drinks to offer so be prepared. With other quality courses around management needs to re-evaluated their management plan.
Playing it again Tomorrow
For some reason people LOVE to hate this course. Perhaps they remember what it was like 8 years ago at its peek, but a bad economy does things to a golf course.
The course is what you might consider "out of the way" but for me that makes it even more of a pleasure to play. I need to state up front I did not pay full price for either round, and that might be why I enjoyed it so much. I am uncertain that I would fork out $80-$100, but since I only paid a fraction of that amount, I can say It was a great value.
First off, this course is TOUGH. The wind can make it INSANELY difficult, and you really need to be able to hit fairways. If you slice or hook your shots, you will not have fun, and probably lose a dozen balls. The fairway grass is very unique. It plays like your standard desert course, dry grass, light rough, and bunkers that remind me of hardpan. The bigger challenge is once you get on the green. The greens are Crazy fast, and if you don't read the break correctly, you might have to chip back up and mark yourself down for a 9.
If you want to challenge yourself and don't mind shooting in the high 90's. Give this course a shot. Just watch out for the snakes... I've seen 3 during two visits.
Unfriendly staff
Good greens but awful course! Some really short par 4s and a few extremely long, uphill and into wind par 4s. Bad fairways and terrible tee boxes.
This course is in a beautiful location, it is challenging
The difficulty of this course is not reflected in the slope/rating for the bronze (women's) tee. It is very varied with challenges on every hole. Precision and thoughtful course management is a must. It plays longer than the distances on most holes indicate. The location is beautiful with some awesome views and absolutely no roadway/freeway traffic noise
Are the fairways even watered?
At $85 a weekend round + the coin they save by only watering the greens it's beyond obvious somebody is sucking the last little bit of life they can out of this place and happily taking your money. The sky is quickly becoming reminiscent of its shadow brother. This place must be looking to close/change owners.
I'd play it again
Great greens good driving range is good. course is dried out love the overall design is good PD design fun track should have a replay rate and/or lunch even on the weekends like the desert does to attract more customers as it has the ability to be a great place.
Lost Canyons
The greens were fine but the fairways and tee boxes were not very good. It is clearly a great course with major economic issues.
Could be so much more!
First impression was the canyons and hills. It was beautiful. Then i saw the course and was reminded of what happens to a course that has lost attention. Bunkers feel like fine dirt not sand. I was told by the NICE guy in the proshop to wait for another single to cart up with and that i was in a foursome. I went to the DR before the round and arrived at the starter 20 min before the start time. told him i was the 1pm tee and that i was supposed to pair up with another guy. So i putted while waiting and saw several groups come up and then leave without him saying anything. I then approached him and asked what tee time those were and he told me the last group to go off was 110pm. he said my guy never showed up so he just let me sit there while the rest of the 1pm group left. I don't mind playing by myself but its not as fun and if i have a bunch of groups to play through thats no fun either. What a way to stat this day a golf. If you're thinking this is going to look like the pics on the website you're going to be dissapointed. I was. Tee boxes were not great, Fairways were very patchy and weeds are starting to take over, Greens were in good shape though.
At this price and experience i would not golf here again. I played the Sky course
This course is difficult & challenge
This course is So fun and challenge.I will play back again.
Play it before it dies
Finally decided to give it a try. Knew this course long ago, never made up my mind to drive a long way to Ventura/Simi Valley area. From the reviews, I prepared for a below average condition but think I should at least give it a go before it goes.
Well, I am glad that I played it yesterday. Truly enjoyed the layout by Pete Dye. Lots of optical inclusions, tricked out landing area, very undulating greens. I had a good time. Finished the round in 3 hours, felt like I was there as one of very few VIPs.
About the course, think it will eventually change hands, and turn into a private club or a very high price public after the current owner sells it. The greens are still good, but overall the course lacks of maintanence, and shows.
Go play it before it dies or changes into something unavailable to you...
Thought this was a nice course. Hope they fix it!
Me and three buddies signed up to play this course. We had heard it was a nice course. They sold the shadow course to build houses on it and the Sky Course is not looking good right now. They seem to be waiting to sell it or something. Hope they figure out what they are going to do and start fixing it up. It could be a great course but right now its not. They should cut the price in half and tell everyone what condition it is in. Either spend some money to fix it or sell it to someone who will.
Great playing pace
I always enjoy playing this course under two reasons.
1. Great playing pace(usually under 4 hrs 30 mins)
2. Despite of the fairway condition, the course is always challenging if playing from the black tee.
Overpriced and bad shape
Course is in terrible condition and costs too much.
Not what I was led to believe
I started coming to LA about two years ago. I come in to town about three times a year. So far, I have found two courses to which I will return: Angeles National and Sterling Hills. The other five or six courses I have played were complete wastes of time. I am a mid to low nineties golfer of four years and heading toward the eighties. I guess I am spoiled by green grass and iinteresting challenging courses.
I chose Lost Canyons Sky because of the reviews (I had played the Shadows course last year and swore to avoid Lost Canyon forever).
I began to wonder, even on a Monday morning, why I was all alone on this course. While the round was quick, the condition of the fairways made the round a joke. It reminded me of an old vaudeville joke: Two people lunching. One says to the other, "The food hear has gone down hill." The other says, "Yes, and such small portions".
That is how I felt about playing Lost Canyon Sky. I was practically alone on the course. I finished 18 holes in 3 hours and was glad to be done. The greens are well tended and the fairways are terrible. Dust flew with almost every swing (at least this is an improvement over the Shadows course which is more like concrete).
If this is what Los Angelenos think a golf course is supposed to be like, then I feel sad for them.
This course is SCREEMING FOR WATER!!!
I would NEVER recommend this course to anyone who enjoys a game of golf.. The MANAGEMENT of this facility should be embarrassed to even show their face. The gentlemen on the counter who greeted me was very professional, kind and had a great attitude. Other than the greens, this course is a disaster, no fairway grass from tee box to green except on a few holes, and for that I say must have had a sprinkler break somewhere on that fairway. GOLFNOW, I paid $84.00 for a two some, someone from your company needs to look at this course before you charge your customers these ridiculous rates. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS LUNAR LANDSCAPE OF A COURSE TO ANYONE!!!
Quick round
We've played lost canyons a few times over the years and have always enjoyed the condition and layout of the course. The pace of play was great, went out at 8:15 and were done by 12. The greens were in good shape and quite fast. The only downside was the condition of the fairways, they were very dry. I'm not sure if this has to do with availability and cost of water, but it almost felt like hitting off cement it some areas. Overall it was a pleasant experience and hope to play again soon.
waste of money
I don't know how the management can make the decision to turn the sprinklers off and ruin such a, what could be beautiful course.
I could only stomach 9 holes. No grass to speak of. Can't take a divot on any shots. Worst conditions I ever played hands down. That includes the round I played on the surface of mars.
Management obviously gave up. They are milking anyone they can to come play on that hard miserable dusty clay. I feel cheated!
The weather in California is good, but the course is struggling
It was Dec 31 2013 and the weather was perfect (I had just returned from the 25 degrees of the East Coast). I will give a mixed review with a whole bunch of caution. I have played Lost Canyons many times and it used to be one of the best courses around, but they have just given up on maintenance. I still enjoy playing it because I know I can fly around the course in quick time (I played in 2.25 hours in the afternoon). There was no rain in Los Angeles this year and the course has obviously not been watered (apart from the greens). The tees and fairways are rock hard. The ball will roll forever in the fairway (for better and for worse).
The tees were hard and there was no grass. The fairways were hard and rolled forever and there were few fluffy lies. The sand traps had some sand, but generally thin. The greens were OK - not great and not horrible.
I like the course but they have given up. A telltale sign of that is that when I went to post my score, they had a sign that they were not accepting handicap renewals.
There have been rumors of it shutting down or going private. They are struggling for sure. Don't take it out on the employees, they are trying (for example the guy who took my fee explained the fairways were "dormant". Just please be prepared.
I might play there again, but if I don't play soon, I don't think it will be open ever again to me. You can get some good deals.
By the way, the Shadow Course is way worse, they gave up on that a couple years ago. Sad.
Unique course
The sky course should not be confused with the shadow course. The sky course presents the challenge of canyon golfing in an arid landscape. The views are incomparable, tight fairways, and hazards with distance difficult to judge because of the up or downhill path of the fairways. The greens are consistent. I enjoy this course.
